I'm certainly looking forward to Trump's and the alt right's views on it and any ensuing spats.

Hopefully with more of this stuff happening the aneurysm that is outstanding for the orange one accelerates

I'm glad they're just doing it, but the cynic in me is sure they've run the numbers.

I expect people will continue to be apoplectic about players who kneel respectfully in protest during a song which includes the words "land of the free".

Aaaaahhhhh - So that's who he is. Wondered what all the fuss was. What a brilliant campaign.

Me too, but they're doing the right thing, whatever their motivation.

In the land of the free either you are a flag waving and cheering whilst crying during the anthem or you are scum that does not deserve to live because you hate the country.

There is no room for doubt, criticism or trying to make life better for the (non white) populace...

They dont scratch the veneer and try to look beneath because they may not like what they see and then have to solve the issues. Hey the bit 10 miles from my work still has an active kkk troop

What I find most encouraging about this is that Nike, a classic 'big evil corporation' with profit presumably as it's primary goal, looked at the numbers, did the research and decided definitively that there were more people out there inspired by Kaepernick's dignified, peaceful protest than there were mouth-breathing Trumpers who'd set fire to their XXXXXL Nike seatpants the minute they saw this.

When doing the right thing is good business it means more people will do the right thing, so even if you're a bit leary of their motives there are a lot of good things to take from here.

I'm not a Nike fan but fair play to them on this, I'm sure they're going to catch a lot of heat for it.

And the alt-right zoomers are leading with "the whole thing is a setup and Nike have been paying Kapernick from the start". Wonder what it's like to be like that?

Or, they thought.. this'll get people talking. About Nike.

Which is why it's an advert.

"Good for Nike". Yes, it will be.

True, but they will drop some people as the backlash kicks in, though some might buy some t-shirts to burn them

Full support to Colin Kaepernick and good on Nike for such a hard hitting advertisment; can't help but wonder if the backlash will lead to rednecks and mouth breathers campaigning for worker's rights in Nike Factories...

Our Soundman just cut the Nike swoosh off his socks. Former marine. Get ready Nike, multiply that by the millions.

Yes, but no doubt they're only thinking of millions in the US. What about the tens of millions around the world that agree with and support the stand (kneel) Colin Kaepernick took? It's a good thing Nike have done. Cynical, probably, but good.

Someone should have explained to the soundman that he could have rolled his socks down a bit, then done a neater job when he got home.

Maybe Nike don't want their brand to be seen on rednecks? Win-Win.

Cant see any good coming out of this now.

With the fuss which is being made would have thought he had dropped his pants, had a shit and then wiped clean using the US flag. Would have thought comparing sleeping around New York vs the Vietnam draft as far more disrepectful if someone is into that whole fetishise the military.

Hasn't the bloke effectively been out of a job for a couple of years? OK I know a pro sportsman probably gets paid large for warming the bench, BUT as a quarterback I'll assume in his prime, he's going to have a massive desire to play at the highest level.

I don't know a great deal about his career success and prospects though.

My guess is that they think they will take a bit of short-term pain, but in the longer term it will be like Ali refusing to serve and they will get decades of good-will for supporting him.

The US sock market could increase as everyone has to buy new socks as I imagine cutting the tops off would lead to no end of threads.  Lets just hope the socks they buy are made in the US (and proper US not by Mexicans in US factories)

By cutting off the tops, hasn’t he effectively ruined them, as that’s where the elastic is that holds them up? Why not just throw them out?

Bit silly cutting the top of your socks off.  Surely some kind of little white hoods woulda been better.

It is a strange subset of any population that chooses to spend money on a product they previously liked or actually need then destroy it and publish the event.

the company gets the money for the original sale and publicity for free. The offended party spends money on the original item and on the replacement whilst getting all hot and bothered...

My son bought a Nike track suit at the weekend. At first I was a bit "oh no my son's a chav, ah well he's only 10, he'll grow out of it..." but now I'm quite pleased about it!!

Fair point. If no publicity is bad publicity, Nike will get unbelievable exposure from the controversy this is going to generate, but they are obviously confident that will eventually turn into more sales. I wonder if any other sports company will be prepared to risk occupying the vacant niche and marketing themselves as the "patriotic" alternative to Nike?

All the racist rednecks losing their shit on Twitter is comedy gold.

A favourite theme seems to be that true sacrifice seems to involve serving your country in the forces, because as we all know none of the people doing that are black, are they?

Nike have a long history of sponsoring athletes of every colour so I applaud them for that.  Some of their other practices may not be great but you'll struggle to find a company of their size that doesn't have a few skeletons in the closet TBH!  I still wouldn't buy anything made by Nike but that's more to do with their image here, same as I'd think twice before buying a pair of Adidas trainers (5.10's aside).

Those people burning Nike stuff, especially while wearing them, are idiots and pure comedy gold.

In a few years, you'll see different sportwear brands preemptively taking sides in the second American civil war. Families torn apart, brother against brother, black against white, Nike against Under Armour....

Unbelievable how stupid some are to destroy a product or boycott them just because someone stood up to fascist president.

I still wouldn’t buy anything made by Nike but that’s more to do with their image here

And pray tell what is this image terrible means you won't wear a certain brand.

Its just a marketing stance. Its got nothing to do with race or anything else beyond selling more stuff. Nike will have concluded that using this guy will kick up a fuss and get them lots of free advertising.

Some of the local drug dealers wear Nike stuff, just don't want to be associated with that.  Otherwise I'd wear some of their kit as it would be good for going to the gym.  Same with Adidas.

Aah yes, bad role models. You don't want kids copying that.

But then lot of professional athletes wear Nike, and they are good role models.

And then there's the millions of other normal people that also wear Nike, where do they fit??

I love next to Tremorfa so there are a lot of life's wasters around and they all wear Nike or Adidas.   The police regularly stop people dressed like them under a local power they have.  It's just easier to not wear trousers/tops/hats showing these brands, nothing sinister about it whatsoever.  I don't know why you're among a big thing of it, I congratulate Nike on sponsoring athletes if every colour and creed.  I'm a jeans and t-shirt person normally but going to and from the gym in the evening it's just easier to wear non branded stuff than attract the attention of the police.  If the locals wore Under Armour I'd avoid that for the same reason and probably wear Nike Instead!

Nike are doing a cracking job of cleansing their brand.

I bet they are glad that the sort of person that behaves like this and has these types of opinion will no longer be promoting their brand by being seen out in it.

All the items that are being destroyed or burnt are already paid for.

It is a great marketing strategy getting people to destroy a product that they have already purchase.

I would there is an excellent chance 50% of the people who have finished burning their shoes and need to buy a new pair will buy Nike again.

Consumerist society protest. Burn what you’ve already purchased or even better buy something just to burn it. I just feel saddened (not surprised) that anyone could be against his stance.

Nike should donate money to a worthy cause for every tweet of some ****ing idiot burning their trainers.

Loving the **** cutting up his own socks.

In a neat squaring of the circle they are acting like the dudes in Teheran or wherever when they burn the Stars And Stripes. Presumably they didn’t have a flag just hanging around, so they’ve had to go and buy one. Then burn it. As Russell Howard pointed out, you’re not burning america’s flag. You’re burning your own flag that you’ve bought, you dick.

So a nobhead in America cuts up his own socks in protest against a protest? If there is an American equivalent to Mensa I doubt he’s on the list.

The reason this protest enrages that piece of shit Trump is because he can’t do a damned thing about it. Basic rule of thumb. If what you do and think is likely to be against what the likes of Trump and Farage would want, then you are on the right track.

It is all quite funny until you realise the mistakes of the 1930s are being made all over again. Narcissistic career politicians thinking they can ride the beast of racism and intolerance to get them where they want and then just pop the genie back in the bottle.

‘Americans for Donald j trump’ on FB are now going down the ‘how is it right that these (pic of Far East factory workers, putting trainers together) factory workers (80% women) have to work for just 20 cents a day to give Nike enough profit to pay CK for protesting about injustice?’

ive enquired as to why they’ve only started being bothered about this ‘grave injustice’ in the last couple of days. Will let you know what they come back with...
