I like a couple of energy bars during rides of about 2 to 3 hours.

They can be quite expensive at about 80p each so going to make my own.

Any suggestions for a recipe please?

(I know I'm probably being a bit tight but needs must at the moment)

Wouldn't bother making anything unless you really want to roll your sleeves up. Malt loaf and peanut butter bagel cling filmed into bite size chunks got me round Hamsterley Beast ok.

Flapjacks.
Very very easy and cheap to make.
Golden syrup, margarine & oats.
You can easily add other things into the mix if you want.

Malt loaf & peanut butter here too, and a packet of jelly on those big rides just for emergencies.

Just got this, packed full with interesting recipes and a lot of decent explanation around stuff(not tried any yet just got the book)
For my part I'd like to know why things work and how and adapt from there.

Flapjacks but none of this margarine nonsense and it also has brown sugar in not just syrup.

I like to add bananas and cinammon to my flapjacks.

Then cover them with dairy milk.

I used to make my own flapjacks but haven't for a while, mainly due to the amount of calories thats in them.

I used, oats, honey or golden syrup, butter, mixed nuts and dried fruits.

Heat honey/syrup in a pan, add butter, mix dry ingredients together, put in baking tray, bake for 15 to 20 minutes. When cooled top with melted chocolate.

Very easy to make and really tasty.

I made some quite tasty ones a few months ago:

Coconut oil
Jumbo oats
Mashed up bananas
Raisins
Fresh Ginger
Honey to taste.

Combine in a pan over a heat and then bake for 20mins.

Isn't that sort of the point?

One of the useful bits in the book above was looking at what the in and outs were, also what's use able quicker and slower.

I've been wondering if something could be made from the spent grains after brewing, it's pretty much just the barley with all the starch removed, tastes a bit like belvita biscuits.

Dry it, add a load of sugar, syrup and butter, bake like flapjack?

Probably pointless though, unless you really wanted a slightly lower calorie, higher sugar content flapjack.

And lots of beer to wash it down. Seems legit.

Usually nutty/seedy flapjacks - oats, butter, honey, sugar, peanut butter, seeds

I made a new batch for the Bucks Off Road Sportive last weekend which worked really well - peanut butter, cashew nut butter, whole oats, milled oats, milled seeds, honey. Wrapped them in baking paper.

Not good for eating on the go but easy enough to unwrap when stopped for a couple of minutes
