You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
I'm thinking of getting something a bit more economical. Need to know if I can get 2 bikes inside the back with max of front wheel and seatpost off.
Yes you can, front wheels off and the rest goes in easy + loads of kit.
We just sold our mk4 estate and bought a mk4 diesel Gti, wish we had bought another estate, in fact we may be selling it and looking for a new estate!
Go for the 130bhp 6 speed if you can, ours gave back 55mpg all day and was a pleasure to drive. Ace cars!
Had a bog 90hp tdi estate. Not a bad car quite reliable parts are cheap. Go for an AWX 04 model. This is the best year for reliability. If you can find a 130 bhp 6 speed you will be very lucky. Cam belt and water pump every 40k if not budget that in price or walk away.
I've got a 2ltr petrol. W reg. 106k. Still get 40mpg on a run. Had a few problems this year but nothing worth writing home about. Mass air meter sensors fail every 3-4 years. As above with cam belt and water pump. Do both at the same time because the cam belt needs to come off to do the water pump.
I'll buy another if or when it dies.
Check steering pump isnt making any noise
Tends to give out and take rack with it. 600 quid for the part
I have a 130bhp Tdi SE version, used to have the 150bhp tdi hatchback version and I prefer the 130bhp to drive
Done 60k in it so far, got 100k on the clock and not had a single problem with it so far, over that 60k the trip says its avg 49mpg, on a long run I can get 700 miles out of a tank. You can get two bikes in the boot with the wheels off.
Things to watch out for:
Water pump plastic blades can go, get it replaced for a metal blade version when you do the cam belt
The electric windows can play up ( did on my 150 bhp version)
They are supposed to mega miles if you choose the short service option over the long service
Check the rear wiper spray works £70 to fix and a common problem on the estates
Bad things:
Handling - they wallow like a boat
Can be costly to service with VW, find a good indie
MAF sensor can go on them
Must be a diesel trait the wallowing due to the weight of the block , was the only positive thing about my 1.4 was with the hankooks it was like driving a gokart.
On my 2nd mk 4. Both 3 doors.
2lt petrol. Bought it at 66k. Head gasket went at 90k. Replaced. Passenger window regulator went. Very common fault. Head gasket went again at 120k so dumped it at auction. got enough money to pay off loan. 🙂
1.9tdi 110. Current car. I've put 40k on it in a year and a half. It's now got 110k on the clock. Air mass went on the turbo but was under warranty so dont know how much that was. Passenger window regulator. Surprise surprise! £190 to fix at local specialist. For 40k of use that's good going I think. I can get 2 bikes in back no problem. Could probably get 3 but there would be no place for 3rd person to sit! Solid car but tdi engine is a heavy lump so the difference in handling with my previous petrol one is huge. the diesel waddles!
Thanks for the advice guys. Btw, I currently drive a Mitsubishi Delica so wallowing really not an issue!
