Ok so after some thoughts.
The wife has a 2009 golf 1.4 tsi. Its been in the family since new. Its not got about 58k on it.
Last year it started making a rattle noise on startup. Read around and read a lot on the dreaded camchain tensioner issue. Over the next few weeks the rattle turned into a proper diesel like chain rattle Got it booked in at a well regarded indie in November who agreed and we changed everything (chain guides tensioner etc). Seemed ok but on startup after been driven for a long period and then left overnight the initial rattle is back. (when the old chain was taken off I was told that the tensioner was over extended so definitely needed doing)
The installed chain kit is the latest oem version.
Im now in 2 minds as to what to do. Do I get them to strip and inspect it or do I put up with he initial noise (that’s a lot less than it was) My thinking is that the oil is draining from the hydraulic cam chain tensioner and that’s the rattle and the newer version will not allow it to skip as per the original design.
Whats others thoughts on this?
I'd be tempted to get the garage who did the work to have a listen - can you video / record the noise and mail it to them maybe and see what they think.
Asked them and there not sure either
