Not me BTW. Stepson has ulcerative colitis & is wondering how many people with it benefit from a non meat diet, if any.
Any suggestions from actual people who have the condition?
Ta.

I have Ibs and went veggie at the start of this year (not for ibs reasons) my symptoms have eased a little, but my ibs is all over the shop so can’t say that being a veggie has caused this improvement or not.

Either way, whether it helps with his colitis or not, going veggie/vegan is a good thing and he should do it

In a prospective study in India, a vegetarian diet was protective for UC, but a risk factor for Chrohn’s Disease.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29987750-risk-factors-for-inflammatory-bowel-disease-a-prospective-multi-center-study/?from_term=Ulcerative+colitis+vegetarian+diet&from_pos=7

It looks like a big effect, but I’m somewhat skeptical, because an effect as big as reported in that study would basically be a miracle drug and new standard of care. So may be an effect, but not in CD, and the misdiagnosis rate might account for no difference.

UC is an awful disease, so I’d say based on the evidence of that and other publications, it’s worth a try but not to expect a lot. Probably for about three months duration, which is the typical length of a UC/CD trial for a new intervention. With a record of symptoms kept too on a daily basis.

With UC you need to find what the triggers are, and they're different for everyone - assume you've heard of FODMAP?
Wife has UC, and the only things we've found that cause a flare up are caffeine and stress.

I have an ibs diagnosis and am veggie. I am aware UC is quite different. But I would say being veggie can be harder because one main source of protein - beans, lentils - and the stuff that makes stuff taste nice - onions, garlic - are fodmaps. As said it really depends what causes the flareups and you just have to keep a diary of everything consumed including drinks and try and work it out. Good luck, it can be rough, and best wishes.

I've been diagnosed with UC for around 15 years now and been on immunosuppression for a decade, to be honest I've not really found that diet plays a big part in how active the disease is - although regular oxo cubes will turn my stomach to water within 20 minutes of eating anything made with them, the low salt ones have no effect on me.
What I do find is that I need a different diet when having a flare, normally I try to have a fairly low processed carb diet but in a flare eating loads of 'crap' carbs and starchy foods really reduces the pain. I think it's the fact that when you're going to the toilet 20+ times a day you need plenty of easy to move bulk passing through.
I will probably be trying it soon though as my daughter has said she'd like to go veggie.
My consultant says some people respond to dietary changes and others don't so your stepson has nothing to lose by giving it a go.
Wish him my best as it's a horrible disease when active, hope he can find a balance of medication and diet that suits him.

Thanks for the inputs folks, I'll pass it on, It'll give him something to chew over. (see what I did there)
He's ONLY trying it for personal health reasons, not moral/animal rights reasons, if nowt works he'll be back on the meat.
