You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Will be in New York for a couple of weeks in March.
I realise the times have passed when the 2:1 conversion rate meant cut price bargains galore - but are there any items that I just HAVE to buy that still represent a genuine bargain against UK imported prices?
I'm thinking, big suitcase, half filled with various bike tools/parts/records etc..
As we are staying with family there is always the added option of having items shipped to them prior to bringing back to Blighty ourselves.
I was working over in the US quite a bit in the last 3 years.
Very few bargains to be had anywhere.
Carhartt workwear is a lot cheaper but that was about only thing I found.
I feared this may be the case.
Looks like i'll be stocking up on a bunch of 'limited edition US' versions of albums that i'll rarely play then..
It’s not all gloom soon you be able to use your blue passport.
Odly it looks like it might be worth while buying some heroin here in the UK and selling over there
USA $200 per gram
UK $31.50 per gram
well it's not $1.3:£1 of a few weeks ago (1.42 today) so it will be a little less painful. The only things worth buying I thought were Amercian clothing brands even US cycling stuff wasn't worth buying IMHO
Twinkies 🙂
Candy
& brands that ship from the US to save international postage costs.
So not a lot really!
what about those little cable clips for KS Lev posts?
Apple stuff much cheaper. We saved £100+ on an iPhone8 and £50 (?) on an iPad
Mail order bike bits to your hotel. Had my eye on a DT fatbike hub that's just about acceptably priced over there.

Except you have to saunter innocently through the green lane at the airport and if not, the VAT etc makes it a non-starter when you add in state taxes.
I'd love a Vexilar SP200 sonarphone for my fishing kayak.......
Not cheap, but nice looking stuff. If I was visiting NY, I'd go there in a flash!

Thats easy for you to say
Exchange rate is good at the moment - you'd be looking to realise about 1.35:1. Anything by apple will be 35% cheaper, but depending upon its value you may be liable for import charges...
Last time I was in the US, I had bike stuff shipped from all over the US to my hotel room. 🙂
Of and Levis are still cheap in Macys.
if you can get to an outlet store then clothes will be cheap, especially american brands, like oakleys, levis etc - but they're not the barginicious goodies they used to be
Fancy a santa Cruz? I've heard they only cost pennies over there.
Candy
Buying shit sweets for less money is not a saving.
Cliff bars in all the flavours
To save big you need to be in a state with low or no sales tax (to get effectively vat free goods, remember the prices on display are ex tax
I'm not sure how but we were getting friends and family discount in Macy's, somewhere in the region of 50%.
I spend a lot of time in the States. My thoughts:
Bike stuff is expensive - online uk is much cheaper.
Imported stuff (non-US) is expensive.
big shops have good sales, especially on holidays - Labor Day, Memorial Day, Presidents Day, Black Friday.
Apple is effectively $ for £, but don’t forget your tax free import allowance to uk is £390. Go over that and you are liable. Sounds like Jambalaya was a very naughty boy! My iPhone SE was just under.
Everything advertised in the shops is “before tax”
Caramel M&Ms
When I was over last year, I bought a couple of pairs of Levi’s at under £30 each, and NYDJ jeans for my wife at well below half the UK price.
In terms of bike stuff, I saved about £100 on a set of Jones bars
I was going to recommend a visit to the Brooklyn Machine Works, but it's no longer there :o(

Well that is a surprise, given how jamba likes to pay his fair share of tax.
Levis are still way the hell cheaper, although I tend to buy them in malls not in downtown NYC.
Some bike stuff is cheaper, but easy to get pinged for it. If you take a bike though, bling it out and bring it back no-one's going to know (except you).
When we were visiting in the mid 00s not only was the exchange rate better but there was tons more stuff on clearance and discount. Things have been squeezed over there as here, so there is less discount stuff.
If you can hit Macy's etc in the sales, and you can prove you're from out of state (passport) you used to just visit customer services and they would give you an exemption from local taxes.
Obviously you need to pay vat and duty on these to bring them back, unless you took them out with you. In which case they'd not have labels on and be worn.
Likewise with apple stuff. If it's used and not boxed etc, it's already yours innit.
Been a few years since I went but can't have changed that much.
Love a good tax evasion thread 😉
You can bring me a Jones diamond frame and truss fork please 😉
