So, the arrival of an outside socket after a rewire is encouraging MrsMC to up her game in the festive outdoor lighting stakes 🤦

Presumably I just need to get a weatherproof box big enough to take a gang socket and timer switches?

If you’ve got access to the wiring inside that goes to the outside socket can you wire in a timer like immersion heaters use? Then you only need the box for the gang socket.
I find it quite a squeeze to get a gang and timers in the box we use.

The lead on our (very understated) lights fit through an open, then closed window no bother, if that makes sense?!

I just wrap ours in a bin liner doesn’t get too hot and waterproof or through the window works as the lead is thin enough.

Leave it open short the circuit breaker.

No more problem.

Last year Screwfix were doing a outdoor kit with an extension lead and water proof box with cable grommets that is pretty good. The extension cable comes out so you can use it for other stuff the rest of the year. It's big enough for the bulky power supplies and switch boxes that come with Christmas lights.

You could swap the outside socket for an outside socket with inbuilt timer.

Outside sockets won't normally seal shut with a power supply style plug, they only close on a slim mains plug.
