Design Tech teacher at a very suited and booted school (well jacket and tie). We have played the H&S card and negotiated that whilst doing the day job dangly ties are daft and not environment appropriate. In reality I spend most of my time on my arse with a mouse or pencil in my hand doing cad/sketchy/doodling stuff and sadly not as much time as I'd like with a welding torch, but you don't kick a gift horse in the mouth if if means less shirt ironing and no daft ties.

So......we need to invent (and pay for from our own pockets) a dept 'uniform'. Chino style trousers as before and a shirt, jacket and tie hung on the back of the door for emergency parent meeting etc. But the top half is up for negotiation within limits. If it's not the expected jacket and tie we need to be in a standard top - not a million miles from being a PE teacher I guess (apart from being a million miles from being a PE teacher for obvious reasons - like the ability to write). We'll have to buy it from a supplier and have it branded.

Thinking - rugby shirt style top maybe. Collared so not too far 'off message'. Polo shirt in the summer (colleague has sleeves of tats he wants to remain covered 12 months a year). I guess dept fleeces.

It's not filling me with joy. I don't own a single polo shirt or 'rugby' shirt to wear off duty and there is a reason for this - anyone got a 'professional in the practical work environment' uniform they actually like ?

p.s. it's mostly cold here. When it's not boiling hot. Oct-March I doubt the temp in the dept reaches 15 degs very often.

If you are not wearing a tweed jacket with leather or suede elbow patches then you cannot under any circumstances call yourself a d&t teacher

Is my camera on again? Can you actually see me typing this?

Do the pupils remove their ties during practical lessons? Struggling to understand why you can't wear a shirt and just add the tie and jacket when necessary.

Have to wear a branded polo shirt in my work. Depends what you wear them with whether they look smart or not so some people manage to look smartish but a lot don't and all polo shirts look rubbish after a few months.

Yes, this was my first line. Kids don't actually wear a tie day to day. They have a 2nd posh uniform for special occasions (this is a posh school) but their day-2-day wear is a very utilitarian uniform. I wish ours was the same. But the official line is that teachers (here) wear shirt AND tie unless they are in an environment where they don't; but just not wearing a tie is not their preferred option. I'd go for no tie and shirt to be honest but I could not be arsed with constantly having to put the damn thing on again every time I ventured out of the dept.

Clip-on ties, like police officers and security guards wear?

Just wear what you normally wear but without a tie?

Seems this has got way too complicated.

Skin tight lycra body suits would cover most bases - hide tatts, not dangle in any machinery . And you could have one of those strippers tie / collar things behind the door - just in case

Old school here.

Overalls, or white lab coat.

Still wear collar and tie.

On or off easily.

I do hope you also have a pipe.

tbh, a labcoat is what I wear now when I venture into the practical parts of the dept. And it sort of works. If I'm honest this is more of a way of getting out of wearing a shirt and tie! And not spending Sunday night ironing 6 of the bloody things.

I am not a stripper. The world is glad that I'm not a stripper.

It's an option though I guess.

I somehow manage to teach while wearing jeans and a casual shirt. I don't think I even own a tie anymore.

Having said that, I'd opt for a proper shirt over a branded polo shirt any day of the week.

Hipster 'shacket'/chore shirt type of thing over your shirt and tie so you can easily take it off to go out into the school?

No good in summer I suppose.

I mean the things that clip the floppy bit of the tie to your shirt, not some chippendale-esque shenanigans. XD

That was me for 14 years. Threw all the ties out and swore never to wear one again. Then I moved part of the UK and it turns out bills still need paying so I'm back suited and booted.

I'm beginning to agree with you that polo shirts are not the way ahead.

Sorry, misread. The H&S floppy tie aspect is really a ruse for not having to wear a shirt and tie. So a tie clip is not really going to help sadly other than make me look more like a 1980s bank manager. I'd rather be a Chippendale (others would disagree).

The Chippendale reference isn't that daft. Retro fit all of your clothing with velcro seams. Then, if anything got caught on the lathe, everything would comically rip off you leaving you wearing just your M&S pants. It would certainly create memories for the kids!

You want to be a Chippendale? You sure this is the right look for a D&T teacher?

Thankfully, I’ve managed to go through my entire working life without having to wear a suit, shirt and tie*, or a polo shirt.
*Apart from the two years I was working for BCA, who insisted that agency drivers and their self-employed drivers had to wear smart trousers, shoes, a shirt and tie! I even got told off for wearing Uniqlo flannel shirts because they had a check pattern, which one bloke said looked like a lumberjack shirt, which was complete bollocks.
I get company branded tee shirts, sweatshirts, fleeces and hi-viz kit, which will all be changing in three days to our new owners branded kit, which I think will be a bit nicer than the boring dark blue with a small blue and grey logo. More a sort of light olive-grey with a red logo. Hopefully the wet and cold weather kit will be of a higher standard than the cheap PU-coated crap we’ve been supplied with up to now. Although most of us have our own bits and bobs that work better for outdoors, I’d prefer to have better quality supplied gear that works and I don’t have to pay for!

Then I moved part of the UK

What exactly is this subject you're teaching? Practical Geomorphology? Design and Tectonics? Craft, Design and Terraforming?

Have you considered a 90s puffa jacket?

Harris tweed 3 piece suit - suggest you have trousers fully lined otherwise you'll be scratching like you have lice; you could go for plus twos or fours; proper brace buttons are a must; checked flannel shirt for added itchiness; wool socks with sock suspenders; green brogues.
Garish tie to clash with rest of ensemble.
Don't use your bespoke tailor - buy everything off the peg and one size too big.
Sorted!
Post photos.

You do realise that in a work place where you have to iron shirts, everything you might replace your shirt with is going to need ironing instead don't you?

My old CDT teacher's preferred get-up was a Tweed jacket with elbow patches plus various shades of brown shirt & tie, then a blue lab-coat over the top for when the band saw got fired up. He also drove a red Morris Marina estate that he'd painted large polka dots all over, so you'd have to do that as well.

If you are going for the lab coat look, you need to do the dark poloneck with it. It's a classic (like 70's) look that will make you seem edgy, slightly dangerous, but ultimately cool.

Think Krieger from Archer crossed with Moonraker.
