Ever heard of it? Me neither! Apparently it's Oxford's dictionary's word of the year for 2022.
Maybe it's finally confirmation that I'm officially middle aged
...but it's two words!
The winning word, "goblin mode", is a slang term describing "unapologetically self-indulgent, lazy, slovenly, or greedy" behaviour.
sounds like most of todays society. How very apt.
Has that woman got really fat feet? or is it because of the wide-angle lens?
Has that woman got really fat feet? or is it because of the wide-angle lens?
Maybe she's a hobbit masquerading as a goblin?

I think she wears barefoot shoes.
Speaking of words and phrases I've never heard of before, I've been invited to a company's "on boarding". Sounds so ****y, it makes me want to turn the job down.
Is dissapoint. Thought it'd be something found on Pornhub...
unlike all the other words on the list in the article, I have never heard this or seen it written before!
And 2023's word of the year will be Redundant Lexicographer.
Who uses words anyway? Emojis and violent gesticulation for the wins.
They see me Goblin, they hatin'
Ever heard of it? Me neither! Apparently it’s Oxford’s dictionary’s word of the year for 2022.
Maybe it’s finally confirmation that I’m officially middle aged
+1
Just seen it in The Grauniad for the first time....
I assume it's something to do with young people spending their house deposits on smashed avocado on toast 😉
I thought it was having a cup of tea badly brewed on waking.
I'd not heard of it either, the story I read suggested that there had been an organised voting campaign by IT enthusiasts sceptical about the "Metaverse" (and rightly so).
I always thought the dictionary editors picked the words of the year.
Anyway, 2022 should probably have been "Truss" as a verb to mean plucking defeat from the jaws of victory.
"Oh god, I cant believe how badly he Trussed that up".
I've heard of a Goblin Teasmade.
Not a phrase I'd heard.
From personal experience of "onboarding" I'd suggest onzadog runs for the door now. It's the thin end of the management bullshit wedgie
Onboarding just means giving you a load of policies to read and sending you a laptop, don't worry 😀
It's like "onshoring" but without any bikes
oh
Remember, there are many ways to be a goblin, don't feel pressured into being another person's ideal gobbo.
I for one will be in Nobbla Blackwart Mode
?ezimgfmt=rs:721x913/rscb3/ng:webp/ngcb3
Others may be David Bowie Goblin King mode, or Tolkien great goblin mode, or Willem Dafoe Green Goblin mode or even Bart Hamilton Forgotten Green Goblin mode, or the most hated of all, Gringotts bank goblin mode
Apparently it dated back to'09 and a Reddit post or something.
I always thought the dictionary editors picked the words of the year.
Always have in the past. But we’ve had enough of experts. So here we are… the “word” of the year is now one that no one in the UK uses. Go internet hive mind.
Go internet hive mind.
Could have been worse - Wordy McWordface maybe....
I’ve heard of a Goblin Teasmade.
I used to have one of those. But she moved out 🙁
It’s my default mode. I’m just glad I’ve now got a name for it.
And Metaverse has been around for years, if not decades, but it’s taken one ego walking on its hind legs and trademarking it to really bring it to attention. Anyone who reads SF would be familiar with the concept.
Same as cyberspace, been around since around 1982 or thereabouts, but it wasn’t until the 90’s and the early internet that it got picked up by people. Including a couple of chancers who tried to trademark and copyright it. Didn’t work out for them, thankfully.
Meh, still prefer scheme goblins.

I think you'll find it's "nob hoarding"
Metaverse has been around for years, if not decades,
TBF they usually pick words which have come to prominence in the last year, not brand new words.
Seems longer ago that Zuck renamed FB, but it was apparently only Nov 2021.
Most uses of "Metaverse" are now in the context of it being a white elephant though.
