So ive had 3 weeks with a chest infection type thing. tbh i think its sinusitus. I dont see why i should go to the docs as a) its wasting their time and b) i dont think they can do much for me. However the other half if giving me grief. should i cave in and book an appointment or just see it out?
Sinusitis doesn't normally give you a cough. I had bad sinusitis a few months ago, because there was brown shit coming out of my nose and it stank.
3 weeks is a fair stint to have a cough.
Either way I'd probably go, just to make sure after 3 weeks, and I hardly ever go to the docs.
I'd say go if it is unusual for you and rule out something more sinister. Don't be a man about it and dismiss it as nothing, not after 3 weeks.
Yes, that what Doctors are for.
I had a persistent cough for 3-4 weeks. It didn't feel bad more annoying than anything. After much nagging I went to the drs and was diagnosed with bronchitis. Dr said I should have come in earlier.
I think a doctor would say that 6 weeks is the time to start thinking there may be more to it.
I have recently got over a cough that I must have had for 8 weeks, it felt like I had a scar at the back of my throat initially and in the final stages I just had loads of chesty catargh - I might have prolonged it with violent coughing, not sure.
My boss at work seems to have caught it as he has that same scar feeling. Although he started a while after I finished, so I doubt he got it from me.
I wouldn't go at three weeks, before this I had several coughs that lasted that long or longer.
If it's persistent and isn't improving after a fortnight, advice is to go see a GP. You could try a pharmacist first, or try NHS 111, maybe, but I'd say after 3 weeks if it's not getting better I'd be headed for the doctors.
Just not A&E, okay?

If your medical centre is anything like ours, if you make an appointment now ,you would be at the 6week mark by the time you saw one

They recommend seeing a doctor if it has persisted for more than 3 weeks.
See a GP if:
- you've had a cough for more than 3 weeks (persistent cough)
- your cough is very bad or quickly gets worse, for example – you have a hacking cough or can't stop coughing
- you have chest pain
- you're losing weight for no reason
- the side of your neck feels swollen and painful (swollen glands)
- you find it hard to breathe
- you have a weakened immune system, for example because of chemotherapy or diabetes
See a GP urgently if you're coughing up blood.
Yes, coughs can hide many sinister things (but equally they are mostly harmless) - it's worth getting checked out. It's what you pay your taxes for.
Sinusitis doesn’t normally give you a cough.
Yes it can do because the crap drips down the back of your throat. Happens to me regularly.
My doctor told me the biggest cause of persitant cough was gastro-oesophageal reflux disease. It was a quick fix in my case, had a cough for 12 weeks over winter before going to doctor, less than a week on my prescription medication and it was gone.
I had a nasty cough for about 4 weeks earlier this year. Didn't want to go to doctor as I'd had loads of antibiotics already for a tooth infection.
Turns out it was Pneumonia. Probably best to go to the doctor.
Have you had a persistent cough for a period of longer than three weeks
Part of the final question on most Life Insurance Applications.
Answer yes, and you will be declined cover by everyone.
Make of that what you will. But Insurance companies understand risk better than anyone
Go to the docs for a cough?
Probably your best bet, other than maybe hanging around a school playground I'd say the doc's waiting room is probably the best place to pick one up. Not wearing a vest should help and keeping your coat on indoors.
I had a cough that lasted a good few weeks earlier in the year. Nothing serious but annoying, and loud. I wanted to MTFU but Mrs YP insisted I get it checked out.
Pneumonia! Not serious pneumonia, not serious enough to get me hospitalised, but enough that I needed rest and a bucket ful of anti-biotics.
if I'd continued with the MTFU attitude then who knows where it would have ended.
Go to the Doctor!
GtiJunior had a cough and mild cold for about 3 weeks then last week it suddenly turned into nasty tonsilitis. Mrs Gti took him to Urgent Care (while I was out dealng with my cycling buddy who went OTB and knocked himself out) and they sent him straight to hospital for IV antibiotics, steroids and paracetamol. Turns out he's got glandular fever.
So I would go and see the Dr if I was you.
In my case, the cough was due to a chest infection, which cleared up with a course of antibiotics.
I am into week 5 of a bad cough. Had two different courses of anti-biotics and it seemed to improve but didn't go.
Last Friday morning was coughing hard and my airway wouldn't re-open properly. 10 secs of gasping and trying not to panic....
Went to a&e as I don't believe you take a risk with airways.
Had full bloods and a chest x-ray.
Was told no sign of infection, clear x-ray and I had probably coughed so much something in my chest was now in spasm when I cough.
I was given codeine linctus as a cough supressent.
Over a week later and it is no better. Woke up at 0230 last night and coughed so much I couldn't breathe.....worrying.
As an aside I now know 4 people with a similar severe cough. Something certainly seems to be going around!
