Hoping somebody can help an oldman..

My yahoo was full of spam sop I recently setup gmail, up and running on my laptop and working fine on my HTC wildfire.

I understand there is no such thing as folders but in the modern world they use what is called ‘labels’.

Can someone in laymans terms tell me how to set up a ‘label’, for example in yahoo I used to have a folder called ‘amazon’ when I got send an order receipt I would move the email to the ‘amazon’ folder.

If I set up a label on the laptop gmail will it show up on the phone?

Cheers …

On top of inbox page is tab labels - click and menu rolls down with manage labels - new page opens and bottom of this is button create label.

and if you go into the manage labels screen, there are options for you to choose whether or not your emails which have been labelled will appear in the message list (on the web) or on IMAP (which is probably what your phone uses).

oh, and if you set up a filter, you can get the label to be applied automatically.

to be honest, I find gmail's search so easy to use that I don't bother applying labels or anything, if I want to find an email it rarely takes more than a simple search to get to it.

ive set up a label up called 'amazon', and on the web and on the phone its got a little 'label' sign, so in essence everything stays in the inbox and you just search for email or in my case search for 'amazon'?

Yeah, you need to forget about IMAP/Outlook style folders altogether. You don't need them. Just hit 'Archive' when you're done reading an email to move it out of the inbox, and star the message if you need to follow it up later. Gmail's search is good enough to allow you to keep everything in one big folder and just search for stuff you need as and when. (This also neatly gets round the problem of how to file something that could fit into two or more folders at the same time...)

[Edit]

ive set up a label up called 'amazon', and on the web and on the phone its got a little 'label' sign, so in essence everything stays in the inbox and you just search for email or in my case search for 'amazon'?

More or less, but use 'Archive' too. This moves everything to 'All Mail' and gets it out of your way so you can use your Inbox as just that, a place to deal with incoming mail. And you'll find you don't need that 'Amazon' label, cos you can just search for 'Amazon' or whatever to find all the relevant mail.

mintimperial is partly right. With gmail it is best just to forget the whole label/folder thing and use search.
but
if you want to use labels and you are using Outlook on your laptop rather than just webmail then you need to use IMAP with Outlook.
