Gluten Free summer drinks ideas?

Over the last couple of months, I've noticed a correlation between gluten and to put it politely a rather upset belly.

Coupled with this I'm off on my summer holidays next week - camping(ish) in Scotland. Normally I'd be taking some beers to have of afternoon, but they are out for me just now. So I need a replacement to hit the same spot - think just back from a day in the hills and sitting down for a cold one before dinner.

Won't have a freezer for Mojitos, just a dubiously efficient 12v fridge. I should add - I don't particularly like sweet drinks so Vodka & Coke and the like is out.

So other than G&T's - what would you all recommend?

Thanks!

Thatchers Gold Cider is perfect on a hot summers day and will still give you a nice pint.

Gluten free information on alcohol: https://www.coeliac.org.uk/information-and-support/your-gluten-free-hub/home-of-gluten-free-recipes/healthy-eating/alcohol/?&&type=rfst&set=true#cookie-widget

Yes I am from the West Country so of course I’d say cider, but I’m not one of the wurzels 🤣

Peroni one is very good - indistinguishable from the normal one.

You sure it's not just the alcohol that scuppers your tum tum? Anything more than a couple of drinks sets me off, doesn't matter what type of booze it is.

Good gf beer selection available here though

https://www.firstchop.co.uk/

Otherwise, how about a Hugo. Prosseco, elderflower cordial, soda water, mint. You can stick your aperol spritz up somewhere.

I second going to the Doctor - could be Coeliac Disease, if left untreated it can lead to some pretty serious complications (i was diagnosed in 2017 at the age of 34)

Aside from that there's several GF beers out there :

You can get a GF version of a few lagers - Estrella, Peroni, San Miguel, Stella Artois.

There's quite a few GF craft beers out there as well.

Ciders ok for a couple of pints, but i find it gets a bit too much after that!

Brewdog does Punk IPA gluten free, not tried it though. I've had the Peroni and can't taste the difference from the normal ones.

As above, just have what you want but a gluten free version. Bellfield have a great range and are pretty easy to find, Sainsburys carry their lager and ipa and sometimes Brewdog vagabond which is a stealthily GF beer in their main line. Tesco generally have GF peroni, sometimes tennants, sometimes Skinny, and occasionally others but it's erratic.

TBH it's way easier to shop online though, just because GF stuff isn't always that obvious in the shops (they tie themselves into knots with this- on the one hand they don't want to put normal customers off with a GF logo, especially when it's in the main beers section not in a free from bit but on the other that makes it harder for the GF customers to find it!) A mixed case from Bellfield, or a selection of Cheddar Ales, would be a good place to start.

Aside but, a lot of basic lager is unofficially gluten free or very low gluten- it hardly contains any natural ingredients after all. There are some where the GF version on sale, is just the same product that's gone through tighter QC and manufacturing, to ensure that it's really GF while the mainline product probably is, but they just can't certify it. Coors light for instance has been independently tested on a bunch of occasions and always came up gluten free.

Yes worth getting a proper diagnosis but for this weekend seems sensible to just avoid normal beer. I only like GM beers that are lager like and they need to be cold imo. (I can't tolerate hazy beers, it's the live yeast that sets off my ibs.) Elderflower cordial or ginger with spirits and soda water can be less sugary than coke and only needs the soda water in the fridge. Red wine or whiskey if you don't want to have to keep stuff cold. Or consider buying ice from a garage each day and have a big container to throw it in and let it melt each day.

If you're camping in Scotland then it's Pina Coladas and getting caught in the rain, surely?

I quite like a pint of lime, soda and vodka with some ice after a ride. Quite refreshing, not too alcoholic, and not too sweet either.

Soda and lime is my go-to non alcoholic drink of choice in the pub. Having it with (a double?) measure in it kinda sounds inspired.

Cheers!

There's loads of good breweries in Scotland now, potentially a few local ones depending where you are, many of which do some good gluten free beers. You could do the whole Aperol spritz thing as well, though never really was that keen myself.

Or just go nuts and do some proper (agave tequila & fresh lime juice only) margarita's and get smashed very easily! Not that I speak from experience...

As @northwind says, the vast majority of beers could be listed as Gluten free, however the brewer doesn't want to spend the time or money to have their product officially certified as 'Gluten Free'.

Have a look here: http://www.lowgluten.org/gluten-test-results/

This gives an insight to how low in Gluten the majority of non-GF beers are 🙂

Unfortunately your issue maybe the Alcohol rather than the Gluten 🙁

Just an example of "non gluten free" being actually gf. As a general rule, if it's fairly clear it's probably GF/very low gluten. There's exceptions so that's not really good enough for someone on a strict gf diet.

(I am coeliac, and also fairly sensitive, I couldn't frinstance eat a slice of normal bread without knowing I'd screwed up, but as a quality-of-life thing I decided that I'd drink fairly normally when out of the house if there was no guaranteed GF option- which to be fair, often there is. And it's never triggered any symptoms. As a test I tried a guiness and that did, unsurprisingly)

There are some branded GF beers that are literally identical on paper to the mainstream product, but have just been produced in smaller more controlled batches and fully tested. And then there's surprising exceptions, like, Estrella Damm tastes absolutely identical to the Estrella Damm Daura gluten free beer, looks the same, smells the same, but is one of those rare BBQ lagers that's actually not GF.

So other than G&T’s – what would you all recommend?

For non alcoholic, I'm a fan of elderflower cordials and tonic. Makes for a work-based G&T and I have one at the moment sitting on my desk. Needs to be strong and there are a few cordial options now - including mint, which never lasts long.

I'm coeliac too - another vote for cider here.

That said I've only tried beer once, fairly recently (speckled hen GF IPA) and it's revolting... in an interesting kind of way. Would try more if they didn't all come in 4-6 packs.

Would highly recommend Jubel, not as sweet and sickly as cider but still fruity and refreshing

I'm gluten free as I go into anaphylaxis when I eat wheat. It started with bread but sadly also happened when drinking beer and lager. As mentioned above there seems to be lots more GF beer on the market now, more than I ever remember (I've been GF over 10 years now) but out of them all Estrella is my absolute fave. Although not offically GF, Timothy Taylor's Landlord is practically GF and I can drink it without issue.

Those Jubels are delicious- closer to a fancy fruit drink than a beer maybe, but also well worth a try!
