First time I've experienced this but new Inov8 running shoes seem to have insoles which refuse to stay put - guess I will have to glue them in place - is this usual?

I used double sided sellotape under the insoles in a pair of runners (not Inov8) I had, which worked fine.

yup. Exactly the same here with my new Innov8 Roclites. The insoles wouldn't stay in place and slide up the heel to the back of the trainer. I've glued them in place using UniBond, they seem to be ok now, problem solved.
