Anyone seen a door like this (alluminium)
Can i get the glass out of lower section?? seems it's build round the glass.
Need a cat flap in the bottom, got a new door coming but not for weeks so was thinking of replacing glass with ply for a temporary solution.
Thanks!
See the thin pieces of timber between the glass and the frame? That's the beading and it holds the glass in place. All you need to do is prise that beading off carefully and the glazing can just be lifted out.
that was my first though but it seems to be part of the frame
Itll be fixed to the frame to hold it in place, either glued or screwed in place. How easily it comes off without damaging the actual frame is an unknown until you try but if you're careful it's unlikely to damage.
Edit: just realised you said its aluminium. Same principle applies but it may be fixed in a less obvious way.
Normally on alloy frames you'll have a rubber gasket holding the glass in place. If this is an old design door then it'll simply be bedded into normal glazing putty and the door frame will have a profile section that the beading will clip into. Careful leverage of the beading with a putty knife (or similar) from the edge away from the glass should pop them out. Then it should reveal the exposed edges of glass and said putty which will need hacking out and you'll then be free to put whatever panel you want for the flap.
Start with a hammer in the middle then remove the broken glass until it's all out(ish). If you're going to replace the door soon anyway then nothing to lose.
Looking at your photo's, it looks like the glass is held in position by a rectangular aluminium glazing bead.
This bead is held in position by a rubber gasket that appears to have been painted. Remove this rubber gasket by lifting the gasket with a chisel or scraper. In your second image (top LHS) you can see the rubber gasket coming away from the bead/glass, so start there.
The vertical glazing beads need to be removed first (you can see the joint in your images). Then remove the horizontal glazing beads. To loosen the glazing beads, carefully push or tap the corner of the glazing bead towards the glass along the length of the glazing bead. I expect the glazing bead clips into the profile of the aluminium extrusion that makes up the door leaf.
It looks to me like ‘U’ section beads that are snapped on over what look like (when exposed) bolt heads and are a interference fit.
Careful prying with a putty knife or similar required from the door stile side between stile and bead.
