"A cyclist from the Italian team has been knocked out of the World Championships after a collision with an e-bike rider in a Glasgow cycle lane. "

""Francesco and I went out and we got onto this narrow cycle path, with this blind left-hand turn, and this other cyclist on an e-bike was coming in the other direction, with panniers."His bike was carrying quite a bit of weight."I tried to avoid him by turning to the left, but from what I remember, he hit me on the right shoulder with his helmet."

Consonni said x-rays showed his collarbone was "slightly chipped" and his "left scaphoid is broken"."

With a few honourable exceptions like the Garscube Road lane and the resurfaced towpath of the canal the bike facilities are often worse than useless. I'd rather have a few more bus/cycle lanes.

There are cycle lanes that i will not use as they are so unfit for purpose.  there are official standards for cycle lanes that these do not meet or even close

My faves in edinburgh are the one marked between the tram tacks if its still there and the  one that is narrower than my handlebars

Many years ago the council repainted the surface of Bells bridge.

No idea what they used but it was a shiny smooth surface that in the wet became a skating rink. I rode on to it, and slight turn and the front wheel washed out and down I went.

Phoned the council with some choice words, and i think a few more went down because in a week they'd repainted it and it had a rough texture finish like they'd used sand or something.

When it comes to planning lanes and things, I get the feeling whomever does them has never ridden a bike.

They've "upgraded" a load in Nottingham, and somehow made them worse than the line painted on the road that preceeded them. They're slightly wider, but now have a kerb you have to go up and down to move out of it to avoid things like gravel in the lane, and send you behind bus stops - deconflicting the road by bringing cyclists into conflict with pedestrians, especially at the bottom of hills where even granny on a shopper is doing 15+ mph. (Although I now get more abuse from drivers for not using them) Good use of funds Nottingham City Council.

AKA professional cyclist needs to be better at anticipating hazards.

Or Eurpeans shouldn’t expect UK bike lanes to meet their normal expectations, sadly.

Either way, none of us saw it to give an impartial opinion*, must be gutting for the pro rider, just hope everyone recovers fully and quickly.

*Though I immediately wondered if it was a legal ebike

We do have a lot of Deliveroo ebikes that are really mopeds. I think if your bike has pogies on it in August you cans safely assume that not a lot of power is coming from the human on it!

On my commute yesterday I saw a group of Belgian riders and two riders from Turkey. Quite good fun spotting all the teams.

The Garscube road lane is great and a welcome break from the wacky races of Maryhill Road.

Maybe as an Italian he was riding on the right hand side of the lane. Who knows?
