For about 2 to 3 months I have now stopped the following
2x toast every morn with peanut butter
3 half cheese sandwiches at lunchtime (3slices of bread)
1 x slice home from work
1 maybe 2 slices after dinner in the eve
Instead now bowl of shreedies as before but no toast
Lunch sardines or mackerel (tin) 3 riveta and fruit
dinner as per norm
Lots of people have said wow you look better etc (was a blobby sort of) im para that its not normal to loose so much weight this fast as ive never dieted before but I guess it is keep thinking ive got something wrong with me...I have my brain is all mush and gives me mental thoughts !
ta
i dropped 5 stone from stopping eating carbs (bread/pasta/rice/cake/biscuits).
managing to keep it off too.
well done, and keep it up.
How much weight have you lost?
Cutting out the cheese really helps. If only it weren't so nice!
Well done for keeping it going, though that's some good suggestions for today's meals...
You have probably reduced your overall calorie intake. That will be why you have lost weight!
Cheese is very calorie dense and tasty so it's easy to eat a lot of it.
Bread = filler food without much nutrition in it really, especially if it's refined, which most breads are even the ones that say "wholegrain".
So you've replaced 8 slices of bread, two dollops of (pretty fatty) peanut butter, and a reasonable amount of cheese with a bowl of cereal, some sardines and some crackers?
Isn't it just that you're eating quite a bit less?
no idea what I weigh...oops no scales in the house !
still snacking on choco though 🙄 oh and Ive stopped crisps every day (work days) to maybe 1 or 2 packets a week !
I still seem to eat lots but I guess Im not[s] mmm off to the cake shop for a gateaux [/s]
I can take my jeans off without unbuttoning them ! is that normal ?
[nothing constructive to add] I'd rather be fat than give up cheese. Or indeed any food that I like. Helpfully I'm a bulbous 12st, and 6 feet tall.
[/nothing constructive to add]
I can take my jeans off without unbuttoning them ! is that normal ?
Yes, if you buy jeans that dont fit.
You have probably reduced your overall calorie intake. That will be why you have lost weight!
And also reduced the amount of insulin in your blood too...
Cheese is very nutritious, but high in fat. There are two schools of thought on fat. The old school is that fat has lots of calories and makes you fat. The new school is that fat lowers the GI of everything and makes you much more satisfied, which CAN make it much easier to eat less in general.
Both work in theory, I suspect the one that works for you depends on your body, diet and exercise to begin with. Good job OP.
This is most likely true but it's a very sound weight-loss strategy to replace calorie dense foods with ones that will fill you up but have less calories (like salad!) As well as cheese, bread is surprisingly calorific too - usually over 100 calories per slice.Isn't it just that you're eating quite a bit less?
Well done OP! Personally I would also lose the cereal and ryvita and replace with scrambled eggs and salad respectively. I like to stay away from processed foods as much as possible, plus they will be richer in nutrients.
If you can stand it dark choc (70%+) is actually pretty good for you, not much sugar and high in antioxidants, etcstill snacking on choco though
If you're concerned about it, sign up for a calorie tracking website like Myfitnesspal. Track your food intake for a few days and see how many calories you are taking in.
"Mr Average" needs about 2500 calories a day. In reality how many you need depends on your height/build and activity levels - but that's at least a guideline to start with. You can use Myfitnesspal or other sites such as Calorie Line to calculate your daily energy needs. If you are eating significantly under your daily energy requirement, there's your answer.
Good going fatty, keep it up.
well done that man.
I've lost a couple of stone over 7 months by dramatically reducing carbs on an evening, not eating breakfast and increasing exercise. one thing I couldn't cut out though was cheese... until I ate about 1/2 pound of sweaty cheese about 6 weeks ago and was ill the next day. even if the two weren't related I can't eat cheese (especially cheddar) on its own now - it just doesn't taste right. it's helping me to lose those last stubborn few pounds though.
Good work OP
Wouldn't worry about the weight loss as that is a considerable amount of crap you have cut from your diet and yes, getting jeans off unbuttoned is almost as satisfying as getting trousers on without having to suck in the gut 😉
I lost a couple of stones in 2 months by cutting down on certain carbs (GI has been done to death on numerous threads) and it makes a huge difference.
BTW mackerel is great, isn't it!
Man eats less and loses weight shocka
until I ate about 1/2 pound of sweaty cheese about 6 weeks ago
really? that is gross man.
I've lost a bit of weight recently (about a stone), one thing I did was replace my big bowl of morning porridge with a breakfast shake:
protein powder, almond and soya milk, berries, banana, and a table spoon of coconut oil (recently replaced with cold pressed hemp oil due to price)
Fat is an interesting one, check out bulletproof coffee for a very modern approach to fat consumption, never had the bottle to do it myself....
If you can stand it dark choc (70%+) is actually pretty good for you, not much sugar and high in antioxidants, etc
But loaded to the hilt with saturated fat, which IS bad.

Mmmmmm, yummy ( warning; irony content)
(recently replaced with cold pressed hemp oil due to price)
The hemp/flax/linseed will be MUCH better for you. Lots of lovely Omega 3
But loaded to the hilt with saturated fat, which IS bad.
Not as black and white as that. There's plenty of articles out there, explaining the possibility that saturated fat has been the scapegoat for fructose glucose syrup, and the obesity epidemic that has caused...

Yeah, that was a consideration too.
Nickc, it's tasty! syntha 6 protein powder is very tasty, and the fruit and berries add to the flavour
There's plenty of articles out there, explaining the possibility that saturated fat has been the scapegoat for fructose glucose syrup, and the obesity epidemic that has caused...
Indeed, but we need to cut that out too.
I like my antioxidants in 750ml bottles with corks in them 😀
The hemp/flax/linseed will be MUCH better for you. Lots of lovely Omega 3
See latest scare story on prostate cancer, combine it with a nice cup of tea and you're a gonna. I'm carrying on with both.
But loaded to the hilt with saturated fat, which IS bad.
Green and black's 85% dark contains 31% saturated fat.
However, two pieces of it is a decent serving, so I'd still not worry about it! I don't get the 70% because it's sweeter and I could easily put away half a bar.. and be worse the wear for the caffeine in it.
so you think our bodies have evolved NOT to use the most abundant and easily available form of fat? Righto. 😆But loaded to the hilt with saturated fat, which IS bad.
check out bulletproof coffee for a very modern approach to fat consumption
that is interesting. I have a black coffee most mornings and then ride to work - I think this has helped me to burn fat more readily. the thought of adding butter to my coffee makes me shudder though. and the chat about toxin free, no-mould, hand-fed coffee brings out the cynic in me.
that's the issue I have with it, the butter, and the associated saturated fat issue... as geoffj points out, sat fats are seen as bad, and I for one, struggle to change my thinking on that!
brakes, are the ingredients easy to come by?
Does it taste OK? can you sweeten it (sugar in coffee is my downfall)
Sorry for the questions.
Oh, and bread is the devil.
I'm sure it does burn more fat because the caffeine boosts your metabolism; whether this effect is more than negligible though I don't know. I have tried BPC - it's actually not that bad and I'm sure you could acquire a taste for it!I have a black coffee most mornings and then ride to work - I think this has helped me to burn fat more readily.
You can't sweeten it with sugar, I'm sure you could with a natural sweetener like xylitol or an artificial one though. I think some people put cinnamon in it as an alternative.
Probably the most important ingredient is the MCT oil (or coconut oil which contains MCT) which has unique properties.
sugar in coffee is my downfall
This is where you have to MTFU. It's one of those things you just get used to, like not adding salt.
that is interesting. I have a black coffee most mornings and then ride to work - I think this has helped me to burn fat more readily
Insulin inhibits the burning of fat, and this effect may last quite a long time. Before breakfast you've been insulin free for a long time so you'll be burning a high proportion of fat on your morning commute. This in turn trains your fat burning metabolism so you'll burn more fat when riding at other times too.
the caffeine boosts your metabolism; whether this affect is more than negligible though I don't know.
Last time we did this I thought the conclusion was that caffeine helps burn more fat at the limits of endurance, ie at the end of a massive ride.
so you think our bodies have evolved NOT to use the most abundant and easily available form of fat? Righto.
Moderation innit - have a read of the China Study
Can't really be bothered, to be honest. Does the study separate the consumption of sat fat from the consumption of refined carbs, which normally goes hand-in-hand with unhealthy people?
Also, as you say, moderation. Obviously I am not advocating we all eat 2 bars of green & blacks per day. But dark chocolate is better for you than, e.g. cadburys, if you are going to eat chocolate. There is no disputing this.
I've lost a few lbs since reducing my bread intake, the reduction in butter might also have something to do with it.
I've not been eating that much less really. I've replaced toast and butter for breakfast with porridge and an omelette. The porridge and omelette fills me up for longer.
I thought that saturated fat only had negative effects when consumed along with other things like lots of sugar or fructose...?
brakes, are the ingredients easy to come by?
I only had a quick read, not tried it - and it's some guy selling his own brand of coffee and MCT oil. I'd like to see if I can just use my Taylor's coffee and Country Life butter instead...
Plus it's hard to convince others (wife) that my current diet is better for me without putting a chunk of Lurpak in my Gold Blend.
caffeine helps burn more fat at the limits of endurance, ie at the end of a massive ride.
this is also interesting. I always have caffeine at the beginning and middle of rides, and sugars towards the end. maybe I need some caffeine towards the end.
This is where you have to MTFU.
🙁
i used a thing called the IDIET, you may have heared of it.
it is ace.......fact..... 😀
I've been using caffeinated gels, and they don't feel like they have much of an effect unless I'm really feeling knackered, at which point they have a huge effect. A coke from a service station has similar effect too.
Also, don't have gels within the first 45 mins of a ride, and don't have any fast carbs for as long as possible before your ride, for the insulin based reasons given above.
I don't use caffeinated gels - I've never drunk much caffeine and have actually been off it entirely for about 4 months now - but I always carry one with me (Maxifuel Viper that my mate gave me) in case of a serious bonk. I expect it will be like rocket fuel if I ever have to use it!!I've been using caffeinated gels, and they don't feel like they have much of an effect unless I'm really feeling knackered, at which point they have a huge effect.
That's a good idea zilog I reckon. I was given a tip for 24 hour races to cut out caffeine completely for 3 weeks before the race, and during it, until you really really need it at 4am. Then it work really well 🙂
Well done OP. Sounds like a positive change.
Got too heavy myself earlier this year, but am losing weight quite well now.
Like you, I've cut out the toast and sandwiches, but most other processed carbs too (inspired by ton's progress in a few earlier threads).
But tbh, it seems like I've gone the other way with the cheese, and peanut butter.
I've been having scrambled eggs most mornings for brekky, usually with a few portions of veg - tomatoes, peppers, courgettes, and mushrooms today. But lately, I've discovered "cheesy eggs". Delicious. Grate a chunk of mature cheddar into your scrambled eggs before cooking. You won't regret it. 🙂 No adverse effects on the weight loss for me either. And leaves you so satisfied that you don't get any mid morning hunger pangs, and snacking's not even a concern.
Same for peanut butter. I really like it, so I've taken to eating it by the spoonful most evenings, almost as a sort of pud replacement. Good for you too. Occasionally almond butter, which is a nice change, instead. Similar results toon- no adverse effects on the weight loss. It is the "no added sugar" stuff. And no toast.
You have probably reduced your overall calorie intake. That will be why you have lost weight!
There's a definite chance you have "reduced your overall calorie intake". But it's a massive leap of faith to assume the cause and effect that way round.
Think about it logically, the only certain fact is you have lost weight. Now with that as the case then your fat cells must have been "giving up" their stored fat into your system. That can only have created a surplus of usable energy flowing round your body. So you haven't needed to refuel, or eat as much. And hunger's far more powerful than "willpower".
To me, it makes far more sense to say that you're losing weight, which is probably causing you to eat fewer calories.
...oh well for lunch today I gave in and had a chicken wrap and a cookie !
thanks for all your positives well-dones even though I got it into my head I have some crappy disease hence the weight loss ! I'm being stupid I know ! (that's a whole different ball game brain stress etc !)
FWIW I lost weight rapidly too (about 3 stone in 4 months) when I cleaned up my diet, cut out bread, etc. AFAIK it's pretty normal.
