Roglic earned that. Time difference when you add the mechanical wasn’t even close.

Primoz would pick today to break his TT jinx. Chapeau - what a ride.

That wasn't even a poor ride by Thomas - he was second at every stage. Amazing from Roglic.

Fair play to Roglic, that was an immense ride. G was best of the rest, it's not like he had a terrible run. Shame ! I suspect it might have been closer without the mechanical, it looked like he threw caution to the wind after that !

Primoz's ride on Belles wasn't that bad it was just a special ride from Pog.

Can we get a consensus that 1x on a road bike is awful, regardless of Roglič.

Some ride that. Probably a fair outcome overall and glad the mechanical wasn't the difference (but why not stick a chain guide on a single ring - especially given the road surface??). Roglic spent a good few days getting over his crash(es?) and just peaked at the right time. Always felt Thomas needed more time unfortunately (eh @weeksy?;). A slow burner of a race but what an ending...

Yeah, one of the commentary team kept banging on about how the main benefit of the massive cog was that Roglic could stick in the middle of the cassette and maintain the most efficient chainline, then you see him spinning away with the chain at some mad angle on the cogs 😖

I still think cassettes bigger than chainring is the worst looking thing in cycling full stop though 😎

Great finish to the Giro, I kind of gave up on it after all the early chaos and nonsense but that was a fitting (GC) finale 👍

would you normally have a mech with a clutch running that setup ?

Also did anyone else hear one of the commentators repeatedly say the cassette (SRAM XPLR?) could only be run with a single chainring? How does that work? Or is it maybe a rear mech capacity thing?

That didn't make any sense to me either. I think I also heard them say the jumps between gears on a 1x setup were smaller which is also the opposite of what I thought.

But then apart from the chain falling off it didn't seem to do him any harm so what do I know.

Yes, notice that. One moment he was talking about how he was on either a 40 or 42T single ring (rather that the 34 he'd have had on a compact) and the next that he would be able to keep his chain in the middle of a 10-44t cassette, have a nice straight chainline whilst still being in a lower gear than they could have had. Maths is clearly not high on the essential qualities list for cycling commentator.

Yeah, that was Robbie McEwen. The perceived wisdom was that only SRAM could provide a 1x road groupset with a 44t cassette. I'd always assumed 12 speed Dura-Ace used the same chain as XTR, so wouldn't that be possible?
Don't want to see it though - I'm off to bleach my eyes after the sight of the winning bike.

Gutted for 'G'. 5 man team, dreadful weather, illness everywhere. 37 years of age - wow, I'm a proud fan.

"It's over for me now, I'm on the piss for the next 2 months" from 'G' when asked about the Tour.

Think it's fair to say that Roglič won that rather thanany of the others losing it. Almeida and Thomas both put in immense rides but that was something pretty special from Rog. Good to see someone who's had their fair share of bad luck keep getting back on and trying (I guess the same can be said for Geraint).

Anyway, looking forward to G and Gee getting in a break together tomorrow and then both somehow managing to come second on the stage.

Watch that interview with G when he says he's on the piss for 2 months and then listen to how he went to every member of Jumbo Visma to congratulate them and you realise he's not a man who can ever lose. Tell me any sports person whose a better role model and a better personification of how sport should be.

Or basic bike tech, should have heard the knots some of them were tying themselves in trying to explain the classified 2x system that Campenaerts was running during the classics 😂

Think I commented on that at the time “VC pushing a big gear due to Classified hub”. Eh? Anyway, feel my decision to go 2x is vindicated- I won’t lose the Giro due to a dropped chain.

I'd have loved for G to have won but can't begrudge Roglic a great ride yesterday.

As above though.... G comes across as not only a great rider but a thoroughly good bloke.

Yes Rog deserved that win he smashed it.

I run 1x on my road bike and like it, but I'm a slow pootler. For a pro? I don't see the benefit apart from cash from SRAM.

What can you say about Thomas that's not already been said? A true great.

Cadence. Similarly (though remaining 2x) Geraint had lower than normal gearing courtesy of a 50/34 chainset.

What I don't quite understand is the chain drop issue on 1x. I get that on 2x it's possible (maybe) to flick the chain back on using the front derailleur but surely on 1x with a chain keeper, a clutched rear mech and narrow wide chainring the chain shouldn't drop anyway. Isn't that one of the selling points?

Same here, it's why I still run rim brakes, not willing to risk a slow wheel change from neutral service on my 75km Saturday bimbles 😉

Cadence

Eh? Surely a 2x system will result in less gaps between gears and ensue a smoother cadence?

1x was used before , in recent times, (one of Adam Blythe’s teams iirc) in the pro peloton and found to be a disaster. Big gaps in gears and no benefits. There’s some point to it in a tt bike with a straight through cassette but this wasn’t a course for that, imho

G and Roglic have a pleasant natter 🙂 it's a funny ol' race of what if's.... both riders kind of keeping their "powder dry" because they were backing their TT ability to bring it home. Will G be kicking himself for not trying to take more time when perhaps Rog wasn't quite there even with out Tao.... who knows 🙂

Wow....

Got to admit it's a bit dusty here...

Cav IS a legend & G? Well, a true gent & no mistake. If it's the last time we see both of them in the peloton then that 180 seconds to the line is a fitting memory of both of their finest attributes. Cav - the best sprinter of all time & G the ultimate team player...even when you're not on his team!

'G' helping one of his mates to victory on this stage is the very reason I love this sport so much.
'G' - "He (Cav) only had Leon Luis Sanchez with him, so I thought I'd help him out".

Where else can a fan stand at the side of the road and cheer on their athlete sports idols.

I cried and screamed today, happy tears.

Geraint Thomas isn't retiring yet I don't think...he wants to carry on and is negotiating a new contract, isn't he? Or has that changed recently?

Wouldn't have called myself a Geraint Thomas fan until today. I really hope he does at least one more Grand Tour so I can properly cheer him on 🙂

Ah yes, I agree. Actually I was thinking about the big sprockets with respect to cadence on that steep TT.

Might not have been a wide narrow front ring?

SRAM website suggests the Red XPLR chainrings are narrow wide.

ratios

SRAM 10-44 is 10,11,13,15,17,19,21,24,28,32,38,44

Dura-Ace 11-34 is 11-12-13-14-15-17-19*-21*-24*-27*-30*-34*T

on a basis of 44t SRAM & 34t Shimano you get (only doing the top 4 as Roglic was deffo at the top of the cassette)

SRAM - 0.63 - 0.72 - 0.86 - 1
Shimano - 0.70 - 0.79 - 0.88 - 1

not much in it, but that's assuming roglic ran a 44, anyone know?

they all are, even my 52t quarq 1x is narrow wide, it's dropped a couple of times since I had it, I've never ran it during stage 20 of the Giro d'Italia though 🙄

that can pic of cav is beautiful to see, seen loads of shit about it being a weak sprint, but you have to get your ass round and over the mountains in the final week, he's crashed how many times? got up, shook it off, been there when other weren't, chapeau

Absolutely! Haters gonna hate. Cav's positioning was incredible once he came off G's tow; his speed of thought to get on the wheel of Gaviria was genius. It's not just about the legs.

Thank you.
Very pleased with my team choice. Even though I lost my sprinter and climber the result was 656 out of 19,349 velogames members.

Cav was magnificent.I really hope he can do well if he's chosen for Le Tour. Let's hope Astana has someone as good as 'G' to help lead him out (wink).

Without being too harsh on Astana here, they don't seem to have got this Leadout thing even remotely sorted. They hit the front way way early, lose all their men with 4km to go apart from 1 and leave Cav to try and find a wheel. Yesterday they got lucky, other times, not so much.
