Tejay Van Garderen (EFN): 'We saw the rain and Hugh said, 'We have a chance to win the Giro.'"
Before the stage, Tejay Van Garderen (EFN) spoke of his long experience in the area of today’s stage: “I love… this is my favourite place on the planet. I’ve done a lot of camps here, earlier in my career, staying at… it was a little chalet called Chalet Gerard on top of Passo Gardena, you know? We go to know the family really well, and, you know?, the training is just amazing, the area is incredible, and in 2017 I came to the Giro and I won a big stage in Ortisei going over a lot of the similar climbs, some of the same climbs we’re doing today. It’s one of the best memories of my career, and it’s one of my favourite places to come to. Hugh [Carthy] he… You know?, we woke up, we saw rain this morning, and Hugh said, “we have a chance to win the Giro today.” And, when you have that kind of motivation from a leader who shows such ambition and such confidence, it’s really inspiring and its easy to just back him 100%.
peloton smashed before they reach the climb
Just in and I see it's another day for fortitude and forming of character!
new shorts
show us the favourites 🙁
or hurry up and catch up
Yates doesn't look great
Looking forward to the highlights later
this is rubbish
Sounds like Bernal's giving it beans!
stopped watching, only so much finish line footage you can handle, get the scores at the end.
Who in their right mind decides to take their jacket off while riding on wet cobbles 200m from winning a race. Not good for my nerves!
No idea what actually happened after Bernal and attacked but Bernal is one hell of a rider.
Total class from Egan!!
Left to pick the kids up from school with 20k to go. Couldn't wait to get back to watch everything unfold...🤦
I've never been a Sky/Ineos fan but have been enjoying this new attacking philosophy. Ganna and Bernal have been awesome.

Yes I think I would have taken it off before the cobbles. Pure class for Bernal though. Very impressed to see EF stir things up, Hugh up from 5th to 3rd.

Impressive stuff from Bernal Yesterday shame we didn't get to see it 🙁
I hadn’t appreciated how close Barnet now is to GC. With 2 more mountain stages and a TT its going to be an interesting final few days.
fantastic images, kinda heightens the disappointment :/
I love how Romain was interviewed just after the finish line and when asked "so how do you feel having finished second" he looked surprised and said "NO! did I?" - he genuinely hadn't realised that only Bernal was in front. Really good to see him back up there
This is pretty cool too

I get why they couldn't broadcast any footage from the motorbikes due to the choppers and planes not able to fly, but don't get why they couldn't have carried on capturing the action to watch later and for the record?
They did, but collating it is not a quick job.
Thanks for that nbt
Stunning, what a ride to victory. I like the ambient sound there too, you can hear the sounds of the bike with no OTT commentary.

I've wondered about this too. Should be straightforward to record locally on the bikes to put together edited highlights later. Maybe it's not considered worth the faff.

Ah. Right, they do record it then (or some of it)?

Interesting no lightweight wheels, are they proving to be a bit "noddly" on descents ?
that's going to settle this years Giro then isn't it....
I can see some big gains and losses, some will crack, some will crack badly....
I've organised all my meetings for this morning and will be on do not disturb er, "editing a document" this afternoon...
pretty as a picture...
then into the red....
stopppppppp. I'm envious !
no 😉

the climbs

mass charge start 🙂
Love the Dolomites. Stayed in Canazei in 2016, actually popped the question to the now wife on the Alpenrose chairlift that goes over the Passo Pordoi. Good times 😎
I'm a day late, but happy Froome at Sestrière anniversary.

😍
some well dodgy goings on in the peloton, 4 riders sitting up at the front in the middle of the road with the rest of peloton coming on fast !!
it's crazy day again....
love it when the "smaller" teams haven't read the script
Here's a question then.
Has this Giro been a little weak/easy in terms of competition anyway for Bernal and INEOS ? Missing some of the people like Pogacar and Roglic for example has made this one a bit easier ? Obviously it's been tough in terms of weather.... but it hasn't exactly been a Vuelta in terms of days of climbing has it ?
bike exchange chasing the break down....
remco down, going to continue.... after a hard ride to get back on
Bernal showing he's human....
Yates has cracked him
looks like he can hardly hold him self up !
Eeek that was a struggle for the pink!
shame Yates lost his 2 mountain men in that crash, them on the front at the start of the climb would of been interesting.
they'll be using that climb again
look like his back to me.... he was favouring one side at the end there
how can a lad from Bury not ride in the rain ????
very reminiscent of the day Quintana cracked Froome on the Alpe.... can't remember who his team mate was but he saved Froomes Tdf that day giving him a wheel to follow. If Bernal wins the Giro it will no small part to Martinez (twas Richie Porte)
Deffo klunk. Good team player there today for sure.
Stage 18: Rovereto > Stradella 231.6km
Long hot day in the saddle, with some lumps at the end.

Chapeau Dan Chapeau.
tough day in the office for pink
Is the done thing for team/teams to test Bernals back on the flat ? Or is it a case of keep the day as hard as possible without breaking you own guy hoping it hinders any chance of recovery before Friday and Saturday tests ?
Lovely piece by Ned Boulting on his Tdf producer, who has sadly died.
Remco Evenepoel and Giulio Ciccone both non-starters today

SHame as I'd read elsewhere that Evenepoel sat up at the start of the big climb to save his energy, then caught the peloton as hi climbing rhythm as just so good. He seem to be strong bu the crash on the descent was obviously just a little too much. Promising though - my guess is that we'll see him at the vuelta rather than the tour
I'm glad DQS stood Evenepoel down. In hindsight, he was never a contender given his age and lack of race days since Lombardia. He'll have a glittering career and he'll take confidence from riding his first GT so well. Perhaps the crash was a way of withdrawing with pride intact?
The BBC's coverage of the cycling is really poor isn't it? Bernal is reported as having 'cracked' and his lead being reduced to 2.21. Nothing saying how that was a bad day where he conceded a massive 3 seconds to Caruso and distanced all others contenders further. He did look to have a wobble but recovered well. When Yates lost 2 and a half minutes earlier they reported that he 'dropped from 2nd to 5th'. Editorially, it just feels a bit gammony to me.
Don't think Yates was on his best yesterday either, going "full gas" and have Almeida ride away from him suggests he's not operating at 100% or holding something back. Anyway some local flavour
cigars out in the peloton, nice gentle 6hr training ride
😀 Ganna scrounging fizzy sweet canned beverages off other teams.
Enjoying the insights from Cherie Pridham.
boom!
****ing motorpacing!
anyone seen any oval chainrings in the peloton ?

after 6 hrs in the saddle....
didn't see the stage yesterday, but he is at times a bit of a pack bully... but hey, you've got to have a few alpha males in the world and he's one.
