make or break for some of the GC riders today then i think. Big day.
I could see the Maglia Ciclomino competition being a bit thinned down for sure.....maybe put some towels and blankets into the broom wagon.
Autopause kicking in 😀
top of the climb has vanished !
Today will be a test of character and fortitude. There's going to be some miserable looking cyclists at the finish line.
can't see the issue 😉
looks lovely!
Jumbo Visma putting pink under pressure from the off
don't sit down Fernando

I've got a bad feeling about this. Not the race - it's all uphill, if it was downhill in fog / low vis I'd be worried about calling the finish lower down to avoid descending in it - but I'm getting set up to watch it in an hour or two and concerned there'll be no helicopter = no TV signal and coverage is trying to describe a race they can't see.
Do the camera bikes record or just beam? Might be one for the highlights......
bike swaps
oooofff astana have hit that hard
astana have the hammer down on the descent
Bettiol brings it all back.
so far so good weather wise though the skies look ominous
This is where I have nothing but respect for the domestique.
Get on the front, give me everything you've got, to the bottom of the climb. Then the wheels come off and they almost literally come to a standstill.
- at that point I phone my mummy and beg her to come and pick me up
but they have 14km at 8.5% with 25%+ stretches to do. And get in before the time limit....but maybe miss the bus and have to fold yourself into a team car. And then do it again tomorrow. And most of the time we don't even know your name......
Nibali gone
Nibali seems to have gone pop. I would have expired at the base of the 2nd cat climb.
Edit The Ineos pace looks deceptive until you see the carnage out the back.
all pedaling squares
There goes Remco Evenepoel.
come on simon!
what a brute
Chapeau!
Wow! Puts over a minute on GC.
What a finish! So pleased for Fortunato, plus it means Beefsteak Bertie will have to make good on his promise to ride from Madrid to Milan if his team won a stage
he looks up for it.....
bertie loses it 😀
safe to say he's pretty happy

did well for a big engine
fruitless and moviestaresque
thinking about the finish, tad odd from Bernal really.... if it was for the win (and not even bonus secs) yesterday I could understand the effort and 11 secs is always welcome but I dunno.
concerned there’ll be no helicopter = no TV signal and coverage is trying to describe a race they can’t see.
Do the camera bikes record or just beam? Might be one for the highlights……
Bit late for this response...
But, generally the TV signal is relayed by a plane circling above. You'll never see it but can observe it doing laps on flight radar.
Good to see the Bike Exchange DS isn't driving the car. Their films are a bit of a daily highlight.

finish
Stopped off for breakfast in Gorica on a cycle tour about 15 years ago. Lovely place

He is keen to continue putting time into Remco ahead of the final time trial (put 1:30 into him yesterday). I would suggest he has done enough now (Remco at 3:52).
shame the crosswinds at the start of the race
blimey what's going on, big crash followed by neutralized ?????
Buchman has face planted, and having this photo taken!!!! I presume it was neutralized because it was a causeway with limited access
why are you arguing with a motorbike rider ?
Buchman out
Simon Stoic
getting all a bit pro EU on the commentary, should stir the ERG to be asking parliamentary questions.
and the heavens open

In a world with such shit team sponsors it's great to see Qhubeka win
Dunno if anyone saw the stage winner taking a pee earlier in the stage, but the camera did not shy away from his organs.
Seems fitting, given it's the 4 year anniversary of Tom Dumoulin's gastro event.
Anyway, it's great to see Victor Campanaerts win after all the effort he's put into the race so far for himself and his team.
Dunno if anyone saw the stage winner taking a pee earlier in the stage, but the camera did not shy away from his organs.
Funnily enough I'd been wondering if it's harder to have a pee in a skin suit than in bibshorts.
Well not ACTUALLY in.

Snowing on the Passo Giau already this morning, will the bad weather protocol be invoked today?
Weather looks a bit challenging today. Suspect they’ll alter the route a bit which is a shame but probably a good call
Official by RAI: Passo Fedaia and Passo Pordoi out of the route. 155 km stage.
https://twitter.com/faustocoppi60/status/1396744648106860544
Still looking for the original source. Pordoi *was* the Cima Coppi as the high point of the race
EDIT - DQS confirm
https://twitter.com/deceuninck_qst/status/1396745381975838724
Edit 2 - this is interesting
https://twitter.com/laflammerouge16/status/1396743031685095429
Looking at the timeline, it looks like the riders wanted to ride it all but they decided to cut it down anyway. Shame as Carthy was up for a bit of a rumble today, an attack on Pordoi might have had some big repercussions. Still, one big hill and a sketchy descent might be enough to make it a good race to watch
in more peaceful times
Confirmed:
https://twitter.com/inrng/status/1396749971022655488?s=20
A shorter, 'easier' race might actually end up being quite exciting.
Good day for other sports though:
https://twitter.com/cycling_podcast/status/1396750124878028805?s=20
Orla was saying the timings will be taken at the top of the Giau so after that they would only race for the stage.
Has anyone seen that confirmed anywhere?
Lotto down to 2 (De Gendt out), lonely ol' bus
Picturing the lads huddled together for warmth at one end of the bus like they were the sole survivors in an apocalypse movie.
Do they still have two cars and two DSs? I know they trim back on swannees and mechanics.
tame start 😀
and now no pictures 🙁
Oh is it raining in Italy? Live coverage seems to just disappear when it rains 🙁
please no not repeats of stages..... i'd rather watch the virtual map.
Apparently once they start descending we should resume coverage as the 4G signal picks up again. Should be fine as good 4G then until the top of the Passo Giau, but no 4G coverage on the desacent to Cortina d'Ampezzo, so let's hope the plane is up by then
https://twitter.com/inrng/status/1396779107841716225
oh, maybe no coverage of the Giau climb unless they get the plane up
https://twitter.com/VeloViewer/status/1396778071815041035
why don't they use those spinning glass window you have on ships ?
COVERAGE IS BACK UP!
The weather is so bad that watching this has made me turn up my heating.
TJ putting the peloton on the rivet 🙂
EF going for the GC today ?
