Me and the Mrs have hired a cottage up there for a weekend of kicking back and relaxing (not taking the bikes, in other words). Anybody know the area and care to recommend stuff to see and do?

Well the obvious answer is the Roman museums and stuff on the wall. They're worth a look, particularly Vindolanda, just a few miles from Gilsland. I'm afraid I can't really recommend any eating places nearby - I've been in Brampton for nigh on 5 years and am still looking for somewhere good ......
There's plenty of walking although it's a tad boggy at the mo. Talkin Fell is an easy walk from Talkin village and has great views. There's also some walk around Gilsland Spa (above the village)in the woods and there's a waterfall on the road from Gilsland into Kielder (dead end).

There's always Carlisle to visit as well.
