Loving this thread. Thanks for the review Northwind. Now very likely I’ll go to that after reading yours and ChrisL’s comments.

Have also booked tickets for LANCO at The Fleece in May. Seeing Loyle Carner 2 days before. So from a bit of spoken word/rap/hip hop to very much keeping it country in one weekend. 😆 Live music is the best.

I also only found out this weekend that he was born Benjamin Coyle-Larner. I’d always thought Loyle was a strange name.

Genuine question: Some of the bands mentioned on here are quite obscure to me how do you hear off their music? Radio 6?

Some of the bands mentioned on here are quite obscure to me

6Music play quite a few, then various music magazines like Uncut review them, and have sample CD’s, also many bands get discovered via them being support acts or playing festivals.
I saw Blondie and Dire Straits as support acts, same with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and The Joy Formidable, who were supporting Howling Bells.
I discovered Arcade Fire, Death Cab For Cutie, Metric, Feist, Black Mountain, among many others through 6Music.

Have you heard of this thing called "The Internet"? There are millions of bands on there! And tons of ways to look up stuff you think is "obscure" and find out about it and what it sounds like. It is pretty amazing.

I know, I know, I've resorted to sarcasm, but come on, you can't expect to have heard of every band in existence these days!

Thrilled to discover that Miki Berenyi of Lush has a new band with her partner Moose, called Piroshka, along with former members of Modern English and Elastica. They’ve got an album coming out and they’re playing at Rough Trade Bristol in April! Yowza!

I know, I know, I’ve resorted to sarcasm, but come on, you can’t expect to have heard of every band in existence these days!

Wot he sez! Whenever a thread like this pops up, there’s always a bunch of bands mentioned that I’ve never heard of, and I’m not exactly uninformed, but there’s always someone new to discover.
Plus, there’s plenty of artist playing music that may not to be to one’s particular taste.

Genuine question: Some of the bands mentioned on here are quite obscure to me how do you hear off their music? Radio 6?

For me it's mostly a long and erratic chain of Bands Who Have Supported Bands Or Played Festivals When Nobody Else Was On. Like, I saw Frank Turner twice last week and OK, he's quite a big deal now but I first saw him because his old band Million Dead did a coheadliner with Hundred Reasons who I saw because they supported... well, everyone, but mostly Biffy, and I first saw Biffy because they supported Weezer about 2 decades ago.

Also People Who Were In The Wildhearts. That's an extremely long list.

Well, The Dead South we’re just a bit awesome this evening. I’d recommend anyone on the cusp of a bit of bluegrass thinking about seeing them to give them a go. Really surprised by the amount of committed fans in a Brizzle this evening.

Just booked Apparat at the grandly named Attenborough Centre for the Performing Arts in Brighton in April.
Pretty chuffed as he's only playing London & Brighton and he's one of my very top fave artistes 😀

@Caher

6Music - Mark Riley, Gid Coe, Tom Ravenscroft, Guy Garvey, Don Letts - I don't listen day time much.

Craig Charles is good Sat alternative to crap/mindnumbing TV and as long as he doesn't talk too much, New Yoik div boy Huey Morgan.

I like Mark Riley on in the background as I actually only like about 15% of what he plays, 50% is interesting scaling down to tolerable and 15% of it is way off the mark for me.

We have rule in our house "3 Songs" - if MR plays 3 shite songs on the trot my OH gets to change the channel.

Tom Robinson Now Playing on the Sunday is good catch up listen too.

I also like Spotify Release Radar and Discover Weekly, plus DezB.

Have been tempted by the nostalgia thing and there's a bunch of us going to see New Order in Brizzle during the Summer. Have always managed to miss them over the years, so happy enough to go and see them with a group of friends. Flipping expensive tickets though.

Speaking of "flipping expensive nostalgia", The Who want £110 a ticket! Will be giving that a miss.

Bought Teleman tickets earlier, so that'll prob be the next gig for me.

Long as nostalgia idiots will part with their money, these prices will keep rising. I bet all the gigs I've listed as going to on here don't add up to as much as 1 ticket for those old duffers.

I'm off to 2 of the 3 nights at Country to Country at the O2 next month, and the songwriters series on the Thursday (3 gigs in 4 days) this is with my 11 year old daughter who is a mad country fan.

Will no doubt go to a few more small country gigs over the year.

I'll try and get to see The Men They Couldn't Hang again this year at some point - i think i've seen them >20 times now but still love them.

We're also taking both our Daughters to Little Mix on Halloween. (yes, i know...)

Had a great year in 2018 for live music which will be tough to beat..

I'd love to have gone to see Chris Stapleton - but I'm away most of the week preceding on a boys ski/snowboard trip so there's no way heading off to London for a gig was going to fly in my house. Enjoy, looks like a great weekend. Will you be doing double denim? 🙂

PrinceJohn, search Loyle Carner Bristol on Facebook - you’ll see the event page. There are people selling tickets there. Can’t comment on the veracity but I’ve bought loads from Fb and never had a problem.

Had tickets for Snow Patrol and Thurston Moore in Jan - missed them both as I later decided to go on holiday then instead... Ah well.

Seeing Chvrches this week. Got tickets for Stray Cats, Men at Work and Billy Bragg (Nov) so far this year. Might do Big Country in November too. Going to see local band Working Men's Club in a month too. And The Cure in August in Glasgow too I hope. That's about it for now, but I'm sure there'll be more...

Not got much planned yet, and less music wise but so far I'm looking forward to The Wall Experience at RNCM in April, Lou Sanders at Crewe Lyceum in May  & Tears for Fears at Delamere in June.

Also hoping to get tickets for Benjamin Zephaniah in November.

First done - Joy Formidable last night. They’ve been away a while, I think record company issues account for this, but they’ve still got it. Really give it everything on stage, for a pretty small, reserved crowd.
Great start to the gig year.

Enjoyed Du Blonde a lot more than I thought I would.

Back story: I have a mate and we have an agreement to always say yes to one another’s gig choices - only allowed to say no if there are previously booked engagements. I’ve seen some great stuff that I wouldn’t have gone to otherwise.

Nothing booked in till May now - Loyle Carner and LANCO in one weekend.

Did anyone here go to Black Deer festival last year? Thinking about going this year and just wondered what it was like? Busy? Camping ok? Etc?

@deadlydarcy - i guess you're a Country fan? When Luke Combs tours the UK next you should go see him - we saw him twice last year and he's amazing live.

Yeah, love a bit of Luke. He's gone quite big in America now - and once they go big there, UK tours are few and far between. Not sure LANCO are quite ready for The Fleece in Bristol - it's pretty small. 🙂

Indeed they are. Not being a "I saw them before they were famous" type, I won't* mention that I saw them in a pub the first time and Jason's anger and ticks were a sight to behold up close I can tell you! Especially as I went not knowing at all what to expect. Fabulous.

First done – Joy Formidable last night.

I wanted to see them in Bristol, but it’s difficult to match gigs with my work hours - alternate weeks I finish at 7pm, doors open time! Buggerit.
They seem to be coming back later in the year, so I’ll try to get tickets then just either take a day off, or switch my hours if necessary.
Big Thief are playing Bristol as well, I’d like to see them again, and I’ve got my Piroshka tickets! Their playing Rough Trade, and it’s a Saturday, so no issues with hours.

Since I last posted - I've seen the excellent Beans On Toast in Truro, a great gig that ended pretty shambolicly, but was awesome because of it.

Also saw She Drew The Gun at the Fleece in Bristol. Who were a little disappointing to be honest - I expected them to be angrier live.

Got Alice in Chains booked for May in brum, Black Grape (supported by The Rotanas) at Cardiff Tramshed next month.
The Rotanas Feb 22nd in Cardiff.

Quiet year for me so far, was looking forward to doing a Festival this summer but the lineups are, frankly, shocking for the cost of the ticket prices!!

Going to see Alice in Chains tomorrow night, can't wait to hear Nutshell live.

Went and saw Art Brut last week. Accidentally got pretty shitfaced, made it home at 3am, had to walk to work because I was blatantly still drunk. I still feel weakened. I love Art Brut but damn it Eddie.

3 massive nights in London this weekend, getting on a train at 10am, to see the Hold Steady, and the Hold Steady, and then on Sunday also the Hold Steady. SO! MUCH! JOY!

I've only been to one this year, unfortunately, and it wasn't a "gig" as such, but Sarah McQuaid at The Bridge Inn at Topsham.

Very good, chilled & relaxing. Especially when combined with cider!

Saw Steely Dan at the Manchester Arena three weeks ago. Amazing to hear live at last the songs I've been listening to for 40 years and they didn't disappoint. Sadly Walter Becker is dead but as long as Donald Fagen is there it still sounds like Steely Dan.

Next gig will be ABC at the Bridgewater Hall complete with full orchestra playing the Lexicon of Love in its entirety. Anne Dudley from Art of Noise who co-wrote and arranged the album will be playing with them.

Chris Stapleton was pretty amazing - proper no-frills performance, just him, his Mrs, a Baas player + Drummer.
Highlights from C2C were Cam, Keith Urban (i was expecting him to be a bit 'style over substance, but he was very good) Ashley McBryde and Stapleton.
C2C 2020 dates already blocked out in the diary ;o)

Have booked tickets for Hawkwind's 50th anniversary tour for the Albert Halls in Manchester.
TBH I begrudge giving the thieving space monkey a penny, but there a 50% chance it might be good.
Obviously, there's a 50% chance they'll be as stoned as badgers and it'll turn into a tedious embarrassment, but I'm happy to take one last gamble.

Also sits rather nicely between the Wildhearts and Camden Rocks

There'll be on here going to see Mac Demarco at the Piece Hall? Not exactly underground any more. Really good venue if the weather is okay, which it always is in Halifax. It was for last year's (fantastic) Father John Misty event anyway.

Just found this whilst looking for live footage of Big Audio Dynamite...

'86 was a damn good year - went to B.A.D, Hawkwind and Killing Joke.
Schoolly D supported B.A.D, cue lots of very confused Mancs getting their first taste of live Hip Hop 🙂.

KJ's support act failed to turn up and they sent some random bloke with an acoustic guitar out as a substitute.
The heckling was hilarious.
The acid kicked in just before KJ came on and it was an absolutely fantastic, if slightly scary do.

Some **** vandalised my GP100 outside the Apollo at the Hawkwind gig and I ended up getting towed home whilst tripping my tits off. Still have the scars. 🙂

Used to go to gigs every week back then, remember Here & Now, Easterhouse (friends of friends) and possibly Trouble Funk from that year too.

Dance music was starting to fascinate me, used to go Rock World and The Banshee with one group of mates and The Red House in Royton in Oldham to listen to Hip Hop.

Bought the first Mantronics album from Spin Inn and cut my hair. 🙂

Seventeen, it was a very good (and very eclectic) year.

****in amazing. There were some minor snags like nearly losing all my luggage in a tunnel on the northern line and "coincidentally" ChrisL nearly getting dragged under a train, and the 2-bedroom apartment we'd booked turning out to have one room and a double bed and barely enough room to stand anywhere else. BUT! The shows were all awesome, 3rd night at Oslo was really pretty close to perfect. And they're doing it again next year so we can have another crack without the shenanigans

Well I suppose we made it to page 4 before Spanner started talking about a gig he went to 76 years ago. That’s quite good going.

NW - glad you enjoyed. I was seeing a lot of stuff about it on twitter over the weekend and having to pretend I wasn’t missing the whole thing. All sounded great. If it’s happening next year, I’m not ****ing missing it again.
