saw them on their last tour, in Manc, on the strength of youtube clips basically, and frankly it was a bit too heavy a dose of amazing solo after amazing solo, after a while it's a bit yeah yeah. I'd no clue they were so popular.
We're off to see this guy next week in Manc again, and I'll be missing likely okay surf to do so and not even minding, much.

Oh, and some Prog; they were often jazz influenced. Yes’ ‘Topographic Oceans’ probably the nadir - a triple album that might just have made a half-decent single album.

I was there too - thought it was truly excellent. However, even I, a self-professed fan of the noodle - struggled a little to attend properly at times. It was funny watching a vast sea of bald middle-aged men's heads bobbing in time to the music, tho 🙂
Saw the Paul Farr Trio at MASH in Macclesfield last night. Excellent gig. Luke Flowers is a bloody amazing drummer, a joy to watch & listen to.

I saw Shijin at The Verdict in Brighton last night. I went because a friend wanted to, I'm not into jazz.
Well I'm still buzzing from it now, I thought I'd at least enjoy it but I didn't expect to totally love it.

Saw the mind blowing Gilla Band in Brighton last night, saw em a few years back (called Girl Band) and they were amazing that time. They've got better. Staggering noise. In fact, I've got a weird vertigo thing going on in my right ear and I did stagger out of the venue at the end.

Unexpected Wednesday night out to see Thea Gilmore last week, which was nice. Next on the bill is pip blom a week on Friday, the first of a three gigs in three different towns weekend…🎶😃
Forgot to mention seeing Angel Olsen at Bath Forum last Wednesday. Great venue, however they were doing a sort of ‘trust barrier’, where they have a marked area at the front that you stand behind, instead of a barrier. Which is fine, but standing in one place for four hours with nothing to lean against to take weight off your feet gets very tiring!
Terrific performance, though, and she has a cracking band with her.

I went to see Richard Marx, he of fluffy hair 80s & 90s soft rock, at Union Chapel in that there London a few weeks back. He’s still got an amazing voice and had the crowd of certain aged women in the palm of his hand. It was a bit of an expensive nostalgia trip for me. Saw him in the late 80s when fluffy haired soft rock was a thing.
I’m taking Boy2 to see The Pretty Reckless at the Academy in Bristol next week.
Frost* at KKs Steel Mill in Wolverhampton next month. Then the next one will be rescheduled Karnivool in Birmingham in February. Those two I’m really looking forward to.

Yes it's an odd venue. They can't make their mind up about standing. I've had:
Artist says 'this is odd, hey everyone, come down the front'. This worked well.
No coming to the front at all (failed spectacularly with a comedy moment of a middle aged woman being chased by security before the majority won out by rushing the front)
Only allowed standing along the sides, with stroppy security.
To be honest, unless it was an act totally suited to a seated auditorium, if they are too big for Komedia, I'd rather they went to eg Bristol

Ages back I went to see China Drum at the edinburgh venue, and there was no barrier but the bouncer- the one bouncer- had decided that he wanted a gap anyway. He was about 5 foot tall, built like a twiglet, and held us all back by sheer force of personality, angle of cigarette, and madness of glare. Took all the way into the encore before someone built up the nerve to close the gap and rock out properly, I assume that person is buried out behind the venue.
We saw Gabriels too (Sunday night in Manc). Excellent, although everyone scratching their heads at how short the set was! What they played was great though, he's quite the showman.
I went to see alexisonfire last weekend, and although I've been to gigs post pandemic this was the first time I really got back into the crowd. I'm a bit fan of theirs so had an amazing time, love the band, the crowd were ace in Brixton too. Needed a breather after the first 30 minutes, but then went back for more! Awesome night.

You know what though, I think I'm done with the Academy as a venue. It's always rammed so even at the back like an old fart you're still shoulder-to-shoulder with folk, and because it's so flat you can't see shit if you're somewhere in the middle.

Managed to finally get to a Bon Iver gig (3rd set of tickets booked - first he cancelled, second I wimped out because of snow/ice, this one was re-arranged due to Covid - twice). At Wembley Arena - brilliant (even if a bit too much of the newer stuff). And topped with a Taylor Swift turning up to sing 'exile'!
This week a slight change and off to see Bug Club!

Thanks for that and glad to hear that they're still cutting it. The first time I saw them in the 70's where unfortunately Ian Gillan (who has a fantastic voice) had left and was replaced by David Coverdale who I didn't rate. However, early 2000's saw me seeing them again and disappointingly Ian Gillan was suffering from a cold or something meaning his usual powerful voice was absent. Really enjoyed their music BITD although unsure whether going back in time is always a good thing!

I've seen TBC three times now, you won't be disappointed. Twice at Boilerroom Guildford, and Weds night at Scala in KX. Scala of course is way bigger and they seemed almost overwhelmed at first (I think she said it was their biggest gig yet). But they hit their straps about 3 songs in and just brilliant from there on. Song 4 of Intelectuals ("pick me like a flower....) was a real moment, 600-odd people singing their song back to them and the sheer delight on their faces gave me a lump in the throat.
See them while you can, and before they get too big. In fact, **** it....I'm getting a ticket for Reading this week, make it four times this year.
Smaller venues are great and still very good value for a night out, but when is too much too much for big gigs!?
I'm old enough to be re-visiting bands I saw back in the 80s and 90s and booked Def Leppard and the Crue for Wembley in July. £125 per ticket (cheapest option - some went up to £2k), £14 per ticket "charges" and then a £3 "service fee". Add the £100 train and £135 hotel and I'm done for this type of event!
I get the cost of putting on a tour and the venue etc but, as I found out afterwards, same bands playing Lytham festival the day after and its £70 per day ticket!
Add the cost to the shameful Ticketmaster practices of trying to flog the worst seats first (seem no longer to be able to select tickets - just randomly assigned) and I'm voting with my feet. Anyone else priced out of these 'big' shows?
I know what you mean..... but how does it compare to eg: a PL football ticket (£40-70 at a guess?), a London stage show (wife is seeing TKA Mockingbird today, £80 tickets) and Moulin Rouge next weekend at 'more than £100' (she won't tell me full price, I think I overheard her saying to someone £135)...... etc. And then as you say, add in booking fee, etc....
OTOH, TBC (did I mention I've seen them a few times) - next week's ticket in Reading is £11 plus a heinous £1.10 booking fee! But a lot of the time you feel they'd just play and would pay us to be there, they seem to enjoy it so much!
Amyl and The Sniffers tonight’s at the worlds finest music venue (Barrowlands). 🙌🙌. A very reasonable £23.50 for a ticket too. Bring it on, although not looking forward to the drive back home.
I have no interest in “big shows” - usaually just old gits going through the motions for the money. Most of my tix are around the £15 mark and I love it. The smaller the venue the better, new bands still proving themselves are what I like and I’m bloody glad of it!
Got tickets for the Reytons at Sheffield Arena next September. They are ace - early Arctic Monkeys meets Reverend And the Makers meets Milburn

Saw Midlake at Brudenell Social Club in Leeds Friday night. Second time this year. Solid setlist and they were on good form again. I liked the venue too - nice and small, cheap beer, good sound. First time there, but will be back definitely.
Saw Martin Harley on Sunday. Last time I saw him was at the Union Chapel, this time in Temperance Cafe in Leamington with a capacity of about 45. It was unbelievably good. Sepultura in Glasgow last night. Absolutely tremendous. I haven't listened to anything by them since Roots, so wasn't too sure what to expect, but blown away. Crowbar were superb, the (poorly named) Sacred Reich were a thrash by numbers snooze-fest.

Yeah, that was why I compare tem to Factory Floor, or maybe Crystal Castles - I think it's just part of the sound rather than words you're supposed to hear. Took me a few songs to tune into that too.
