Was up in Todmorden Unitarian Church last night filming Tom Smith from Editors on his solo project (he's in Bakewell on Saturday but sold out.)

He's doing some solo stuff and stripped back Editors pieces. Enjoyed it last night - good acoustics in the church. Always good to work with Tom. Super friendly and professional.

We just shot his video at Wentworth House - Rotherham.

Also realised I've not been up this way in years - in fact last time was MTB and ending up at a small place called Summit from Matlock on the Pennine Bridleway. That was a hard day. Used to do Mary Townley challenge too. Can't be far away.

The valley looks amazing for riding. Literally up everywhere!

Got tickets yesterday for Super Furry Animals in Cardiff next May. Their first tour for ten years so hoping it's going to be a good one.

£250 is never fair for a gig if you ask me - its a few hours entertainment! And there's plenty of decent bands for a tenth of that to go and see.

But it's just the same as, say, theatre – you can see your local am-dram group do Les Miserables at a local community hall for a fraction of the cost of seeing the West End production – but much less cost is involved in putting it on so they don't have to charge as much – most West End productions (or touring versions of the same production) are well over £100 a ticket.

FWIW, I have largely stopped seeing the bigger bands because the prices are getting silly, but sometimes I want to see the particular band, and The Cure, for me, are one of them.

Also, I don't know if you realised, but that £250 mentioned earlier to see The Cure – that was for three tickets.

Yeah, for 250 quid per ticket I'd be expecting Elvis Presley himself, reincarnated!

84 quid a ticket is still stupidly steep IMO, and there's no way I'd be paying it for the Cure alone - having Slowdive and Mogwai on the bill too makes it slightly more justifiable, kind of. Definitely an exception for me.

Couldn't get Cure tickets in the presale yesterday, hoping for better luck tomorrow.

One of the very few acts I'd pay that much for, or go to that big a venue for.

Kudos to Bob & co for giving a shit about their fans.

It's not, it's completely different. I don't like theatre. And when you go and see small bands you can come on here and be all smug that you saw them for cheap before everybody else. I think you'd be a bit lucky to catch an up & coming Sean Bean at an Am Dram show 😀

I didn't, that's not so bad then. Soz 🙂  (except if its Ticketmaster, then Bob doesn't really care about his fans IMO )

It's the same in that bigger productions with bigger stars cost more – they simply cost much more to put on so the tickets are more expensive – but you have a choice to see the same show at a fraction of the cost (I once saw a school production of Les Miserables that was absolutely amazing).

2026 is starting to looking a tad Iron Maiden centric.

Smith/Kotzen in Feb (Rock City).

Iron Maiden themselves at Knebworth in July, along with the Darkness, the Hu, Airborne and The Almighty.  It looks rather like a new Monsters of Rock, but at a less convenient for me location.

Up the Irons 🤘

Just got tickets (for a very reasonable £25 each) for Baxter Dury in Manchester in November, as the new album sounds fantastic!

I thought it was at the Ritz, which is a great venue, but turns out it’s at the Albert Hall which is the best venue in Manchester. It should be a cracking night, as it’s on a Saturday night too 🙂

Tried again for Asha Banks tickets for my daughter via the dreaded Ticketmaster – had the same as the other day on the pre-sale – added tickets then they'd gone before I could checkout. How crap. So then I had the idea to go directly to the venue website and bagged two. Now I've done a bit of research and it turns out Manchester Academy is multi-venue and Stiff Little Fingers are playing on the same night so I may well drive my daughter and her friend there and go see SLF whilst they are watching Asha Banks 🙂

Something really stinks with Ticketmaster - that Asha Banks gig that sold out immediately at 9am – well, there's tickets available again now. WTF are they playing at?

Ticketmaster is shite. Put 2 tickets for Super Furry Animals in my basket this morning and by the time I clicked on Pay I got a message saying they were no longer available. This was about 45 seconds after they went on sale at 10.00am.

(I already have 2 tickets for my wife and I but was trying to get another two for my daughter and her boyfriend.)

Yeah, that was exactly my experience, both in the pre-sale on Wednesday, and this morning.

Anyway, I now have two sets of tickets for Asha Banks - two for London, and two for Manchester. Anyone want two tickets for London at face value? LOL!

Worth it just to see him perform Miami! I read an interview with him recently where he described being babysat by his father's musical acquaintances - a very peculiar upbringing!

China Crisis last night at the Tung Auditorium in my home town of Liverpool. Seen them regularly since the 80's. Both grew up only a few miles from me in Kirkby (I grew up in Fazakerley) Some of the best music of the period in my view and Gary Daley turning into a stand up comedian as he ages 🙂 Only downside was it clashed with Alfa Mist who were on at the same time nearby..

Was tempted to pick up a ticket for My Chemical Romance at bellahouston, £90! In theory it's a mini festival deal with a big support but none of that is announced yet and it sold out so they could announce 2 random local pub bands and it'd make no difference.
And there's a bloody stupid Golden Circle ticket which is basically the shittest way of all to do this, "let's make sure the people down the front are wealthier, rather than it being the most energetic and up for it fans, and then lets take those up for it fans and spread them out around a barrier a mile long so that the crowd feels dead". I love the band but I just cannot be arsed.

Ticketmaster of course shat the bed- website went down, people got kicked out of queues and lost their tickets. I just went and had a look, it says "limited availability" and still presents as if tickets are available and lets you go all the hoops and steps and then says "sold out". But hey they will sell you a "verified resale" for twice the original price.

I've said it earlier in this thread but it's a perfect storm. Ticketmaster do not give a shit as long as they make the sales, they don't care if it works properly, if the first person in the queue gets one or not, or if they all go to touts, it makes absolutely no difference to them. Bands and fans care about these things but that's just completely irrelevant to ticketmaster, they could not care less about the things bands and fans care about, because of their market position. They are not incentivised to be good.

Same thing happened to me, got straight in, 4 in the basket, paid with paypal, but the payment failed and then all sold out!

I'm lucky though, a mate managed to get sorted. We're in for the manc Apollo gig.... Getdown services supporting, should be a belting night.

A really unusual gig last night:

Billy NoMates with a couple of mates but the really unusual bit was having a Circus Artist called Emily Sadler for support. She had the room captivated.

That sounds great! I remember going to a Lemon Jelly gig where instead of a support act they gave everyone a goody bag including bingo cards and the whole audience had a few games of bingo to win signed artwork 🙂

I saw Billy NoMates support Sleaford Mods. That was a top night.

We’ve just got tickets for Kraftwerk in May at the Apollo in the pre-sale this morning. Result!

Ah I had one of those last week that pissed me off more than usual, at the frank turner thing- during Ben Brown who filled the room to bursting and was doing interesting, clever folk stuff where you want to hear the lurics, but these 3 sat down right at the side of stage and started having a shouted conversation all the way through. Thing that pissed me off was when I said "scuse me but would you mind quieting down" they INSTANTLY and completely shut up, I didn't even get to the end of asking before they apologised- so they were all fully aware they were taking the piss and did it anyway and were just waiting to be told to shut up. That's worse than the pure ignorant type imo, that's childlike.

****s

Yeah, these were childish enough to yell “BYE” at us when we moved away from their retarded gabbling. Well done on being polite about it, I never can be!

Previous band I saw, M(h)aol, actually stopped a song to tell some bloke to shut up, got a massive cheer from me. Not enough bands do it. Dale (RiP) from the Amazing Snakeheads was the best though - he was pretty scary telling people in his harsh Glasgow accent.

Not the same, but similar. When Metallica did the cinema release of 72 Seasons and my buddy and I went along, we had the misfortune to sit behind a dude who was on permanent send, got three songs in and after two polite requests to keep it to a minimum, he got a pretty blunt 'shut the **** up'. He made a scene but was asked to leave by the cinema staff.

The mind boggles as to why some people pay good money to not pay any attention to their purchase.

Been a good long weekend of gigs.

The Architects at Co-op live in Manchester, supported by House of Protection and Wage War. Then Killswitch Engage last night at the Academy Leeds, supported by Decapitated, Fit for Autopsy and Hatebreed.

Good times.

Cocaine I reckon.  There's definitely a rise in the number of gobshites at gigs and I can only imagine they've got a bag in then need everyone to hear how interesting they are.

Saw Helen Bauer do stand-up on Saturday night. I would say stand-up comedy, but the comedy was replaced by some kind of therapy session,  where she got all manic and told us about her mental health issues. Post gig laughter and recollection of the hilarious bits, was replaced by bafflement and apologising to my psychiatrist partner for making her sit through another "patient" session! Hmm, got Nick Helm at the end of the month, hope his act hasn't gone the same way, cos he clearly has issues too! 😬

Seeing him in Brighton on 30th 👍  I shall film the whole thing on my phone and not dance (cos I am a millennial knobend) 🤣

Also got Jacques Greene and Nosaj Thing doing their Verses GT thing at EartH (Evolutionary Arts, man) in London the week before, expecting a proper multimedia show 🙂 (which I shall record entirely on my handheld device, of course)

I went to see Lamb at EartH and I shall not be going there again.  Sound wasn't great and so many people talking I could hardly hear the band.  Maybe not the venue's fault but spoiled the night.

Off to see David Ford on Sunday. Love this guy, it sits oddly in my music taste but on the one hand I love it when he's just quietly singing quiet sad songs about being sad, and on the other I love it when he gets the loops of doom going and creates a godawful noise that's like one entire Mogwai crammed into a single person in a silly hat.

Outstanding evening seeing Parkway Drive in Birmingham 10 days ago, brilliant show with a fantastic stage set and incredible atmosphere. Good support from Amity Affliction, never heard them before but pretty impressed.

This was followed three days later by Obituary and Testament, also in Birmingham. Obituary were sensational and had not listened to them since Slowly We Rot. I'm sure Testament were excellent as usual, but the sound was dismal so couldn't really tell.

Saw The Stranglers on the first night of their tour in Leeds on Friday night – they were very good. Two moans though – the O2 Academy was way too crowded – we were almost at the back, but there was no room to move around and we were being constantly pushed and pulled as people were walking back and forth. No other local venues seem to allow so many people in (Brudenell and The Crescent being the two other places we normally go to). And we got to the venue in good time to see the support (Buzzcocks), but the queues were silly long – we got in literally as the last chords of the last song were being played. The O2 is notorious for the queues, but this was *MUCH* worse than I have ever known.

Back at the same venue next month for Gary Numan.

I took my wife, my stepdaughter and her partner to Aussie Pink Floyd in Brum last night. It's the 50th Anniversary of 'Wish You Were Here' tour, so obviously the whole album gets played, along with plenty of other classics. The musicianship is ace, the lightshow is superb, we were just transfixed for almost 3 hours. If you have any interest in PF (and I know it's not everyone's cup of tea) then go see them

Got tickets for the Saturday night in London today. VERY excited - Sugar was my gateway drug into the fantastic musical world of Bob Mould but I never got to see them live.

Seeing Bob and his current band in November then this next May. Brilliant.

Can anyone recommend a cheap place to stay near the O2 Forum in Kentish Town on the Saturday night of a bank holiday weekend????? 😮

Does it need to be nearby in London? I'm going to a gig in King's Cross a week before Xmas, booked a Premier Inn in Kingston. Train or tube will cost about £8, and take about 45 minutes but the room is costing me £55.

We're staying over Friday night in London - I just used booking.com and airbnb to find some cheap accommodation. Ended up being the Hackney Premier Inn. But there's plenty of options. The last time I booked a night in an airbnb and it was the back room in someone's house. Not luxurious, but did the job for a night 🙂

I mean, yeah, but the original point was about people talking loudly at gigs

Plus, I guess, for non-signed, independent, artists (like Gaz Brookfield), exposure is everything, and if that means phone-cam videos on YouTube then so be it.

Forgot to post after but PWEI pre tour show at the 150 capacity Fighting Cocks in Kingston was a cracker.  Proper little sweat box, mix of classics and the new album (which is more hit than miss), up close and personal, band in the crowd and even a lone crowd surfer (who was probably back in the accounts dept the next morning).

Went to see Last Dinner Party in Coventry on Monday for an album release show.

Wouldn't say they're my normal cup of tea (too sophisticated!) but they are amazingly talented and it was a really impressive show. Great to see a young, new band releasing something a bit different.

The album is also excellent and I think even better than their debut.

PS (album release show concept also good - now I'm older, no support and an hour long set is enough... on a school night at least!)

Depends on the band, and YMMV obviously, but I'd be irritated at paying full price for a ticket and only getting an hour, especially if it wasn't a local gig so I'd paid for travel, etc. However, I have no patience for those acts who love their long, long sets of deep cuts that nobody ever listened to in the first place. Springsteen, I'm thinking of you!  🤣

In fact, thinking about it a little more - a full price gig with no support and only an hour? To launch a new album which few people will be familiar with? That's rubbish. (I'm assuming that the tickets weren't reduced?)

I go to quite a few album release shows and they’re significantly cheaper than a full price ticket where I go. (Banquet records). Sets are usually mixed with the crowd pleasers as well.

In fact, thinking about it a little more - a full price gig with no support and only an hour? To launch a new album which few people will be familiar with? That's rubbish. (I'm assuming that the tickets weren't reduced?)

Tickets were much cheaper, buying with the vinyl album (which I'd have bought anyhow) think it was only c£10 on top so bit of a bargain really.

Last week was Spear of destiny on thursday, moved from the Oran Mor to King Tuts wah wah hut. Kirk was on form once again, smaller venue, smaller crowd than theatre of hate a few weeks ago, but still a great performance.

Friday was Assemblage 23 at Ivory Blacks, bit of bleepy futurepop, supported by the frontmans wife, Mari Kattman, who was surprisingly good.  More of a surprise was my ability to dance non stop for 2 hours. good banter afterwards at the aftershow, meeting a mate I'd not seen in person for about 4 years, before my old bones willed me to go home in the small hours.

My wife went to New Model Army in edinburgh on saturday. Said Justin Sullivan was on fire, properly riled up and angry, old lyrics as relevant today as they were when they were written. Sounds like a good gig to me.

Psychedelic Furs tomorrow at the Barrowlands. Saw them a few years ago at the academy and they were good, despite the venue being a bit rubbish. Barrowlands though rarely misses a beat.

Support is Anja Huwe of Xmal Deutschland, which I'm quite excited about.

That's not bad then. I made too many assumptions! 😀

Jacques Greene/ Nosaj Thing supported by Kûcka last night at the EartH centre in Hackney was great. Well, it was was when we found a spot away from the ****ing talkers. Man people are such ****s at gigs! But anyway, we found a spot, fully in the bass zone, was fab.

Saw email on the train home that the marvellous Man/Woman/Chainsaw are in Southampton in Jan, so grabbed tickets.

2 gigs next week, Nick Helm comedy and Daniel Avery the day after.

Gillian Welch tomorrow at The Palladium. New venue for me. Saw her/David Rawlings in Brighton some years ago and excellent. Played White Rabbit as an encore.

Acid bath tickets for Manchester next year went on general sale this morning, in principle - not a sausage of availability. Nada.

Is it common for presale to completely clear stuff out? It's not a massive venue (the Ritz) and I guess there would be a lot of interest, first UK dates ever from a very well loved metal band.

Usually they put a certain number out for presale and the remaining on general sale ime. Just go see another metal band, they're all the same anyway. 🤣 [joking!!]

My wife went to New Model Army in edinburgh on saturday.

I saw them at Glastonbury last year (at the same time that Coldplay were headlining Pyramid). They were wonderful – so much raw energy. I am really looking forward to seeing them in Bradford in December (with Terrorvision and Paradise Lost supporting).

Ahem...

I always check to see if the venue has tickets (note, they have moved that gig from The Ritz to Manchester Academy) – it worked for me recently getting Asha Banks tickets for my daughter. Again, sold out on Ticketmaster within seconds on both the pre-sale and general sale, but plenty available on the venue website for several weeks.

Oh yeah, I always do the same, especially if Ticketmaster. Then if they are only available on TM, I won't buy them. Woo £58! a veritable headbangin bargin 😀  (You won't get a sniff of tix for 14th Nov though. Shame, she looks awesome  🤣 )

Awesome Johndoh thanks - didn't think to check, got 4 tickets sorted.

They're also supporting SoaD at Tottenham's stadium next year - would be fun to see SoaD but don't really fancy a stadium gig when you're really there for the support act.

Haven't done many gigs this year compared to usual, seen Oasis at Heaton Park in July, have seen a few local bands punk pop disaster, shiver, and kerranged over the year and have the Offspring coming up next month in Newcastle but other than that it's been a quiet year for live music on my side

Paradise lost are playing very well this year.

I'm off to see Fields of the Nephilim tomorrow night, support are claytown troupe and Balaam and the Angel. Balaam I saw support The Almighty last year and they were great, claytown may be OK, don't know if we'll make it for them, they're a bit pub band like....
