I'm quite a fan of buying my own handsets and paying as I go. Giffgaff seems like a good option...Can anyone agree or say why it isn't? Thanks.

I moved to giffgaff from Vodafone. So far quite impressed

Pros:-

Very good peer support, cheap data and text on the goodybags
Can just bin it and move to another as no contract
Website clear and easy to use
Free calls to other giffgaff'ers (I put my kids on it as well)

Cons:-

No iphone tethering

seems alright to me...

bit confused as to how/when to top up though - am sure i clicked the auto-top-up thingy, but didn't seem to work. i thought it had, as i went a month a 2 days before i ran out of credit (middle of a call, just before i had to make another call to someone to let me in... bah.)

no idea how i got another 2 days out of them. will see what happens this month anyway.

Picture messaging doesn't seem to work on my wife's - uses an iPhone 3. Have to pay extra for sending picture messages so you have to buy credit on top of a goody bag.

Website good though

mastiles_fanylion have you manually changed the MMS settings on the iphone to the giffgaff url?

Pretty good imo - minor quibbles only and MUCH better service than I ever got from orange!

The new recurring Goodybags is nice, basically like having a contract in terms of fit and forget but you can cancel or change at any time.

POSTED 32 MINUTES AGO # REPORT-POST

I *think* so - did a bit of setting fiddling when we changed. Must double-check when I get home to see if I did that bit

Been with them for a couple of years; they do seem to have issues with account management- I've several times been unable to top up or buy a new goodybag, but it's not like the RBS/NatWest snafu.

Never managed to use all of the 250 minutes in a £10 'bag in a month, but no issues about using 2-3GB in the same period (R6 & TMS streaming FTW!)

iPhone tethering is technically possible, but against T&Cs.

You just reminded me to set up reoccurring goody-bags, they only just introduced it this month. Am still a bit confused by the top-ups but don't you generally need those.

Been with giff gaff a year now. Got sick of paying out on contracts decided I wanted time out. I run my business phone with giff gaff as some said above not always easy to remember top up you usually get a reminder text a couple of days after you run out. I save alot from what I was paying contract and apart from a few small issues that that you get with pay as you go I think it's a good system.

Been good for me, and you can buy "Gigabags" if you need to use the sim for tethering.

It might or might not be worth looking at theregister.co.uk for their recent coverage of giffgaff - all very jolly peer marketing etc but their systems/compliance/backup was presented as being a bit patchy.
