Gherkins - whole or sliced?

After the most recent FGF post, I had a thought.

Do you get more gherkin getting the sliced jar over the whole gherkin jar?

A cheese slice is a great tool for slicing gherkins, if making a sandwich I will already be using it, so saves on washing up. But, if the ratio favours the pre-sliced, I might need to switch my jar buying.

Sliced don't keep the crunch.

^i'd eat gherkins from the bin.

Whole, they stay crunchier.

Thanks for the Xmas shopping reminder, love these as a treat!

If you buy whole then you can always slice them for variety? The reverse is very difficult!

I prefer sliced. They are more 'pickled' taste.

Whole, smallish ones. But that's cos I like eating them whole or in thick slices and don't generally put them in sandwiches or whatever.

If you buy whole then you can always slice them for variety? The reverse is very difficult!

But much more entertaining.

Went on a food tour in New York once. One place had barrels of the stuff pickling away. They were amazing.

So in barrels would be my choice.

Cornichons ftw +2

But we once bought large sliced gherkins by mistake and they were most agreeable

Some posh cheese, a little bit of charcuterie, a sliced gherkin and a small glass of sherry. Civilisation.

Apart from maybe apart from having a ploughmans lunch, I do slice mine up. So time wise sliced makes sense, but good points about the crunch!

Tesco whole gherkins – 49p / 100g

Tesco sliced gherkins – 81p / 100g

But what's the brine to gherkin ratio in each...? I feel like that's the main variable to consider before you compare £/weight... I'm assuming the weight also includes the weight of the water, so the more expensive sliced ones might be cheaper in terms of how much gherkin you get?

Further investigation required!  🙂

Not really, Simon's figures look like they're the drained weights, though I make the sliced gherkins slightly cheaper at 77p / 100g.

I like the whole Tesco ones, they've got a really good crunch and can be sliced as required. Lidl's are too sweet for me and some of the branded ones are ferociously salty. Sometimes I'll chuck some dried chillies, sliced garlic or maybe extra vinegar into the jar and let it do its stuff for a couple of days.

Sorry, I clicked on the fancy crinkle cut ones.

Not deep fried then ? America started it, I'm just North of the Wall so it's kind of a cultural thing here...

Not deep fried then ?

Half of me thinks "hell yeah", the more sensible side thinks "a hot gherkin, bleurgh" but I'd give it a go.

I'm not keen on those but her dill pickles are the biz.

A long long time ago in a galaxy far far away (well Germany) my grandma had so much produce from her garden there was a cellar full of pickled loveliness. The cucumbers with dill and the yellow beans were especially prized.

I like the little ones.
On a Saturday night we usually make a cocktail, margaritas or caipirinhas are the norm. But just occasionally I like a martini. Especially if we have oysters as a starter. But instead of a plain one I like a sort of Gibson variant. On a cocktail stick I put a tiny gherkin, a cocktail onion, an olive, another cocktail onion and finished with another gherkin.
There's my five a day in one go.

Saturday cocktails and oysters for starters? My brain is struggling to decide whether @bigjohn looks like Daniel Craig or Peter Stringfellow.

Pickle fries are excellent. Never met a gherkin I didn’t like. Wouldn’t eat a Mac Donald’s, but would eat the gherkins out the middle.

I won't be eating gherkins from the bin if there is ANY oyster juice in there.

I grew cornichons once, never got round to pickling them ?

Gherkins need not be binned, they are best left unbought IMO.

I have had a deep fried battered gherkin before, was nice, if a little soggy.
