my wife received a phone call and a letter from the DVLA today, following a visit to see a neurologist yesterday.
she was expecting it, but after 35 yrs driving it came as a bit of a shock. it is for 6 month to start with.
how hard is it to get it back, if medical test come back showing nothing, and do you lose it for good if test come back showing epilepsy.

anyone know?

Daughter of a friend had quite bad epilepsy so couldn't get a licence. After she'd got it under control for a couple of years she was allowed a licence, has taken her test and now drives.

I lost it due to a junior doctor bolloxing up a medical report. My psychiatrist couldn't be bothered to fill it in so gave it to a student who had never seen me to do.
Trying to get any sense out of the DVLA is impossible. Even when I got a letter from my doc saying I was fine, DVLA didn't want to give it back. Finally, I went to my local MP who used his position to help. I got it back after 8 months of hell as I lived in the middle of nowhere at the time with hardly any public transport.
Good luck.

and do you lose it for good if test come back showing epilepsy.

Normally have to be seizure free for a year before you can apply for it back. Although think there are different rules if only experiencing seizures in your sleep.

An attendant at the local pool was allowed to drive once his epilepsy was "under control". Shortly after he came round in a wrecked car having had a big enough accident on the autoroute to get over the barriers, fortunately the autoroute was deserted so no other vehicles involved. I haven't seen him for about a year so I don't know how he's getting on but there seemed to be a random factor.

Seizure free for a year on treatment and you can re apply. My mates wife was in a similar position and is back driving. Seemed pretty straightforward. GP should help. Didn't stop her riding her bike.

It's very possible but may take time... Two examples.

Friend collapsed as an alcohol related issue and voluntarily handed in his license in, skipped a year on medical advice then worked with a doc to get a year renewable.. It's all going well.

Bipolar friend, again, working with a psychologist managed to get his licence back... Took a bit of time but he got it.

Main obstacle was medical in that these people saw different doctors / specialists, inaccurately filled in paperwork from the psychologist and misinterpretation and errors at the dvla.

Stay on top of the paperwork and it may be ok with perseverance ...

Hope you get it sorted as loss of freedom of independent movement is a big thing

the licence isnt revoked permanently. if you disagree with the decsion you can appeal. if you accept the decsion then once the period of time is up simply re apply for your licence.. on the other hand.. i ve had mine revoked a couple of times for medical reasons and simply just got back behind once the time had passed.

The Missus initially lost her licence as a result of having seizures every couple of months for about 15 years. Once she was fit free for 2 years she could drive again and did so for 10 years.
A couple of years ago she had a massive triple fit out of the blue, so lost her licence again. As it was an isolated seizure it was thought she would get it back after 6 months, but her neurologist was playing it cautious as knowledge of this stage of her condition was extremely slight.
