My son has got tickets to a nancy ball match at Old Trafford on the 19th and has only just realised he can't actually get there and back in a day... 🙄

Because I'm a nice dad/mug* I've said I'll drive him and go to the cinema while he's watching the match. I'm assuming that traffic conditions around the stadium are going to be abysmal?

My plan is to go to the Trafford Centre and park there and he can get the Tram to the stadium. Does that sound sensible? Or is there a better option?

I think if you want help from football fans you shouldn’t belittle their choice of pastime.

Lighten up, life's too short.

My son is taking a girl, the last thing he needs is his dad hanging around.

I was going to offer you some sensible advice, but then you were horrid about my favourite sport so I shan’t!

Only kidding, obvs 😃

Traffic will be gridlocked, the trams will all be absolutely rammed too. There will be massive queues to get into them and they’ll be packed in like sardines

Do what everyone else does and park in Salford or Chorlton/Firswood/Stretford and just walk to OT. Less hassle and quite pleasant to soak in the atmosphere on match days

If you’re hell-bent on going to the cinema then park in the multi-story at the Lowry and go to the cinema there. It’s a 10/15 minute walk to OT.

If it was me I’d go to the match with him or just have a walk around the Quays. It’s quite civilised nowadays. If you insist on being indoors, the Imperial War Museum North is well worth a visit. It’s on the Quays and a more interesting option than the cinema IMHO. It’s a bit of a different experience to your standard museum and you’ve got the viewing platform there, to look over the city

When I took my son to the Soccer Aid game a couple of years ago, I parked here: https://goo.gl/maps/3212ifmZLtvb6eBx5

It's an easy walk to OT and handy for the cinema: https://goo.gl/maps/sF4E5uw8MQkvcEPz5

IWM is a good shout actually, thanks.

@oldtennisshoes is that street parking?

I was actually hoping he'd offer me the spare ticket when the original invitee decided she wasn't ready for a relationship but the young lady he's taking is an old GF who's a very good friend.

"Nancy Ball"? say that to a few football supporters and see that happens. Not sure if you were skillful enough to play a sport at school but i assure you there is nothing nancy about playing football.

Yes, on street parking and free, or at least it was a couple of years ago.

Keyboard warrior with no sense of humour? I played Rugby, well enough. In the scrum.

See what else is on that day before you plan, this time last year I went to see The Killers at the cricket ground, same day as Alicia Keys at the arena, Ed Sheeran at Etihad and Parklife festival. It was a bit mad, but for a Monday evening not a first team game or international it should be plain sailing.

When we went to the 6 music festival a few weeks back to a gig on Saturday night at Victoria warehouse I prebooked a spot on the quays on someone’s carport for less than the multi-storey would have cost. I’ll see if I can find the link

edit- it was done through the JustPark app. It was on Winnipeg quay. If you search fir Salford quays parking on the days and times you want it will give you options. Assuming they’ve not all been booked up of course…

edit edit- soccer aid is this Sunday the 11th not the 19th? Typo? Quays parking this Sunday seems sold out on the app. Salford it is then?

Oh yeah it’s parklife this weekend isn’t it. We are travelling to manc on Sunday for my son’s degree show. Cousin in the midlands thinking of getting train to manc and meeting us there. Trains are all ££££ so she’s coming to Sheffield and cadging a lift with us instead. Trainline app Waring if crowded trains due to parklife.  Glad to hear it’s going to be even more mental on Sunday…

It's England vs N Macedonia in a Euro 2024 qualifier on Mon 19th. I'm going, but we've booked parking at OT and are going early. I've been to OT on matchday a few times now and parked at the ground. It's busy yes, but not unbearably so (IME)!

Yeah, walking is definitely the best option. Get yourself a dodgy burger and a half-n-half scarf en route 😃

Or is there a better option?

Do you climb?

The Trafford Depot is one of the better UK bouldering walls...

IWM
Old Trafford cricket ground.(entrance near B&Q if it's still there)
Some of the local schools and colleges used to do parking albeit season tickets but might do pay on day)
If parking on side Roads they clamped down alot, think there's a map showing residential parking only zones somewhere.
Maybe investigate if train is running to the south stand platform too.

I used to work there. They're properly keen on enforcing residents-only parking when there's an event on, watch the signage carefully if you're going to park on the street in that area.

Think you can walk in from Salford Quays/Media City.

Might be something at the cinema/theatre, or Imperial War Museum North or whatever its called

I think your original plan was actually quite good. It offloaded all the misery into the tram journey (back)... which you wouldn't be involved in.

But @binners plan is better - even though it pulls you back into the misery a little (post match traffic wherever) it's worth it overall.

I'd add only: probably better to park on the side you are approaching Manchester from / leaving towards. If the stadium is walking distance then so are the quays / IWM etc.
