Son and sister in law have given us tickets to the GP which is great but at such late notice we have no flights or hotel booked. Hotels obviously very expensive now, haven't even looked at flights yet but probably hideously expensive if even available. Happy to drive over but that still leaves accommodation to sort. Had the probably crazy idea of hiring a motorhome for the weekend which kills the two birds but then it's got to be parked somewhere. Is this madness, what would STW do etc...

Check flights, so many over there prices would be OK normally. I've been over gp weekend and still got hotels just head a bit further north in the city and use the trams.
Worst I've paid was $120 a night when India played ****stan in the cricket wc at the g.

The GP is in down town Melb, it's still quiet up North Melb but don't think you would get a way with a tent in the park, in the Mall maybe but there are some locals who have that spot fairly regular

if it's like Silverstone there are specific camping areas. I don't know if it's the same down under

Nearest place to pitch a tent is a long way from the circuit as its in the city, you can drive most of it any other time. Been there on a few gp weekends anything out of St kilda doesn't seem much different to a normal weekend.

waves from Melbourne - pretty sure no camping at GP circuit*
- basically its a converted park in the middle of a residential/commercial area and it gets pretty covered in all the back up infrastructure. Do see the odd campervan parked up on nearby foreshore carparks when out riding but am pretty sure the bayside councils don't let many get a full nights sleep as the freegoing Aus' people do like their rules. There are a few campsites but way out north with nothing nearby... drive to a station and train would work. If got the time and not been there then the drive from Adelaide can incorporate The Great Ocean rd and other tourist attractions along the way...there is some good MTB at Forrest in the Otways?

you can drive most of it any other time

pretty much up to practise day with all the stands and fencing up - there are barriers in the middle of the straights to curb enthusiasm and a heavy highway patrol presence to deter the over enthusiastic

*there is camping at the motoGP circuit out on Phillip Island when that is on
