Trying to contact HMRC without any joy. Ringing in on 0300 200 3310 but the automated system keeps guiding me to online forms and eventually says that all advisers are busy. I need to speak to someone, are there any other numbers I can call?
Don't pay them - they'll soon be on the phone. Or you can have a friendly chat with the bailiffs when they pop round! 🙂
Have you tried their "live chat" function? I was pleasantly surprised when I used it - and in my experience they were considerably more helpful than anyone there I ever spoke to on the phone.
Yeah, keep trying the page but no luck yet. I see that they are open until 8 so will try again later.
Before covid you'd get a clued up telephone advisor very rapidly on the phone
I had to make a call about something around Sept time and it was about a 2 hour wait. So I waited, and a decently clued up person answered and could help me immediately.
I've always found them brilliant over the phone, and whenever there was something they couldn't immediately answer, they got back to you
Live chat sounds good ^
We are incredibly busy, as 40,000 of us are trying to do a proper professional job from the kitchen table or spare room, with occasionally shakey IT, demanding toddlers and constant interruptions for bike part deliveries*
Though today it might be that 20,000 of us are in a beer garden after queuing since 6am for new Primark pants.
*some, all, or none of those reasons apply.
I had to ring them last week, got through, took about 45 mins. Was worth it as they always sort things out. Probably one of the best call-centre things going.
I've had to contact them recently on a couple of issues. The webchat has worked very well. After hanging on the phone listening to the music for a while I've got through most times. I've noticed (probably a coincidence) that if I say yes to carrying out the survey afterwards I get through quicker.
Once you're through I've always found them pretty good at resolving your issue.
Yes I found them excellent - when you get to speak to a person. It can take a while, I think last time I was on hold in the queue for a good hour.
45 minutes hanging on, got through to someone and the **** hung up. Let's try again shall we...
Doubt they actually 'hung up' on you. More likely dodgy broadband at home, where most of the call handlers now work from. As mentioned above, try the webchat function; I've had good experiences with it too.
I had to call them today and used the from abroad number and was connected instantly. They were absolutely useless and no help whatsoever though
It used to be possible to phone up first thing and get through quickly. I've had the phone answered before the official opening times in the past.

As far as I can tell you get cut off after 1 hr on wait ... I think for the OP you just keep trying and eventually get through then its random if you get someone helpful or not
If not just hang up and restart...
Don’t pay them – they’ll soon be on the phone.
Actually they answer pretty quickly if you ring the payment number...
I ended up owning just under £40k due to a mistake on my self assessment .. they were more than happy to take payment but not help me correct it.
