ive always done my own decorating and I’m pretty good at it; but... we are buying a new house, it hasn’t been updated in years and still has 90s wall paper in some rooms.

Time is precious and whilst it is likely to cost a fortune i’m seriously considering outsourcing the wall paper striping (or just lining paper over the top) and decorating thougout.

Having never employed a professional decorator what sort of questions should I be asking and what do I need to watch out for?

I want to ensure I get a quality job else will look at it every day knowing I would have done a better job.

Go on recommendation,  and always look at their work if at all possible. Might just be my experiences at work, but i'd avoid larger contractors.

We use a local guy, recommended by a very fastidious friend who he did work for.

First time we used him was about 7 years ago.

I've barely touched a paintbrush since.

I can do a good job but nowhere near as quickly and effectively as he can and besides I'd rather be outdoors.

Mrs Seadog is always keen on letting someone else do the bigger things beyond just a repainting of a room.

Annoyingly though it’s always a case of her hating being around when it happens (not comfy around people who she doesn’t really know) and not being happy with strangers in the house alone. So, she gets to bugger off and I’m left hanging around for a couple of days wasting my time.

But, to be at the least bit helpful, local recommendation is the key. Our choice does quick quality work and was given the thumbs up by a few folk we know he’s worked for.
