I have an old-ish TV and just bought a 5.1 surround sound set up.

The TV only has component out. Various inputs incl. 2 x HDMI.

All of the speakers work individually but I can only get 1.1 output. Only the front right speaker works. If I swap the different component cables around then sound will switch to the other front speaker.

Will component out* play through all speakers?

The 'TV' is coming from YouTube on an Android box and then to the TV via HDMI.

Thanks a lot

*is that the correct term for the red, white and yellow cable

Well you'll only get stereo at best so you would need the amp to use one of it's pseudo settings to get more.
Does the amp not have HDMI inputs?

Connect the sources to the amp. If the amp has video pass through by HDMI then it'll take it on through to the TV.

That way you select the input from the source on the amp. The TV only acts as a monitor. You don't need any output from the TV unless it is 'live' TV you're watching. In which case you'll only get the audio signal the TV can decode.

Just another thought, does the TV have an ARC HDMI?

Thanks for the replies.

I'm out but made a note of the connections on both.

The TV:

2x HDMI in
2x component in AV in
DVI audio in
audio (red, white) out

The amp:

digi audio in
HDMI out
AUX in (red, white yellow)
component out (green, blue, red)

Android box:

HDMI out

I can see how if there was an HDMI in on the amp, it would make sense to have the HDMI from the android straight to the amp. If memory serves me correctly, I have an HDMI to red, blue, green cable. Would it work to have that from the android box to the amp and then HDMI to HDMI from the amp to the TV?

When you say stereo, do you mean 2.1 or pure stereo. (L&R only)?

Nb. it's not really a media room. It's got a massive TV, big sofas, no windows and no toys allowed; doesn't mean I can spend money on a sound bar / amp or anything significant. Low on our list of priorities!

Thanks again all.

If memory serves me correctly, I have an HDMI to red, blue, green cable.

If you have such a thing, the chances of it working from HDMI are considerably slimmer than that of it working to HDMI, if you see what I mean.

Why on earth didn't you get a HDMI amp?

It really isn't. That's composite video, and about as crap as you can get.

I didn't get an HDMI amo as I've bought from friends (cheaply) as and when things are for sale. A 57" flatscreen and a 5.1 surround sound for less that 50GBP total. We actually used a timer for the last fortnight purely out of interest and were at 4 hours a week TV time. No way we could justify splashing cash on more tech.

I'll check the HDMI/composite cable when I get home; I get what you mean re which way around it is. TBH,if I paid 12 pounds for a reasonable 1.1 set up, I'll be happy....
