I think I know the answer to this but I thought I'd ask in case there is a better solution to landfill
We are renovating this year and removing some old carpets. They are classic 70s horror's, nobody is going to want them other than for a dog kennel
I was wondering if there is any alternative to the local tip, eg are they in any way recyclable?
My local tips (North Manchester) have a recycling bin specifically for carpets.
If yours landfills them, maybe it's worth trying a tip in a different nearby council area?
Or check with your tip - could be they separate it out and recycle anyway.
Depends where you are, as i know someone who could use a load of old carpets for archery targets

There's usually someone (occasionally me)Â who's bought a new car and needs to make a boot liner, or want's it for the garage as it's far nicer to kneel/lie on under a car than the bare concrete.
A lot of the recycling is they get shredded and mixed with sand to make the bases for showjumping / dressage arenas as you need something loose/dry like sand, but bound together enough that the hoses don't slip/sink into it, but not organic soil that turns into mud.
Hopefully they separate out the cheap polyester/nylon carpets first otherwise that's tones of microplastics being churned directly into the soil!

I'm a card-carrying yogurt-knitter and even I'd draw the line at someone else's used carpet. **** knows what fluids it's absorbed over the years. Carpet-fitters won't go near them, which tells me all I need to know.
Don't the youth find them them useful for making dirt jumps for their bicycles?
On their facebook group Chicksands Bike Park seem to be grateful for used carpet donations.
There is someone (you'll need google), who actually makes carpet bags.
We cut ours up and used it for covering the compost heaps.
