Ive a well loved 12 yr old motorcycle that has some black plastic trim around the clocks etc. Its faded to a charcoal grey sort of colour.

Is there anything i can do to make it look a more original black colour?

One of my mates recommended Maxima SJ1 spray, which seems to be a silicone type product, but ive not tried it yet.

Does anyone have a recommendation?

Thanks

Ian

Remove trim and spray with flexible trim paint - works really well used it on some 30 year old fender flaps on my 90.

Most of the back to black type polish nonsense last a matter of weeks/months in UV light.

Worse still is the blow torching it which just brings the oils from within to the surface making the material even more brittle

As in the stuff that car bumpers used you be made from? If it is, skim with a blowtorch seems to be the YouTube hack du jour.

Edit - that's obviously as good as the person recommending it 😂

Not cheap but a little goes a very long way.

Silicone spray works well, may have to re-spray after a few months, but it only takes a minute, and gives some protection against brittleness too.

I've tried a couple of spray on back to black products on my van, which has acres of plastic trim all around it (probably 6 square metres!). All have faded pretty quickly and it's expensive as you need about three cans to do all the trim!

Blow torching is very popular on my van, however I strongly suspect it makes the plastic go brittle and even more faded when it wears off as I've seen a few where the bumpers are chalky grey.

Last year I risked a potential snake oil purchase from a Facebook Ad...Polytrol.

It's been on 18 months, still black and no sign of all the ripply moulding marks that use to show across the front bumper.

It's an all round colour restorer so not just for trim.

+1 for the g techniq c4. Did some very weathered Mini plastics with it. Impressive stuff.

Try a tin of this stuff. Works well on slightly faded black.
