Getting hold of round wood timber. Almost thinnings

Random question of the day. I have a project where I could do with a load of raw round wood timber straight from a forest but on the small side. 4" - 8". Length 7 - 14' ish but obviously would get longer to choose the part of the log I want. Almost thinning's. Species is unimportant happy with plantation pine. I know its the type of thing that it frequently harvested but of course sent off in waggons to large processing plants by contractors who are not going to want to talk to some guy who wants 30 - 40 small diameter bits. I could arrange collection myself if needed. No idea who or how to get into contact with? An ideas? I am drawing a blank. Spoke to a small mill but they only deal with specialist "nice" timber from small contractors rather than the generic small pine I want.

Whereabouts are you in the country?  You need to speak to a merchant rather than a mill.  So someone like Euroforest, Tilhill or the like.  They may be able to sell you a wagon load from a recent job.

Find a firewood log seller - explain what you want and that you're willing to pay the going rate of logs.

Or, contact a local tree surgeon.

What do you actually want them for?

You're after fencing blanks, the ones that go for 4"-6" half rounds. Normally some sort of 12' variant. This size material normally comes from first thinnings.

If they've been through a harvester head they'll be well chewed by the rollers though. Handfelled would have a cleaner finish.

If you are in a sweet chestnut area, a coppice cutter can probably find what you're after.

If you are south/mid Wales I have some suitable stuff that peels easily (hemlock) and I really need to get on with cutting anyway.

@welshfarmer not far at all. The poles are in a wood near Brecon, but I work over Abergavenny way just as much.

No. Nothing like that. Not tantalised, not machined. Just the raw timber.

Find a firewood log seller – explain what you want and that you’re willing to pay the going rate of logs.

Or, contact a local tree surgeon.

Tree surgeons tend to deal with small works and have chopped the timber in this area having spoken to a friend of a friend who is one in this area.

Located in Dorset

Ok thanks that is some names to go off thanks, that sounds the ticket.

Ok, more good info thanks. South Wales is not that far for a full lorry load but I would like a small load first to experiment with my idea so now I have a few more good term will try find some people to speak to thanks.
