.. i can do, but i need athingamajig to enable me to make use of the file.
off for a tour of germany and would like to store some GPS tracks on the phone.
any recommendations on apps for the phone (Android)...?

I use viewranger. Very easy to import gpx files. You can use free maps which are pretty good or premium maps such as OS or ign which cost money but aren't crazy prices. You can pre load the free maps on WiFi before travelling.

Strava does a send to phone function, never used it though .....
