OK so my daughter turns 17 in a few weeks. Her provisional driving licence has just arrived. She's dead keen to get behind the wheel.
Only thing to sort is insurance. However my car is a Passat estate and the wifes is a beetle cabrio - neither ideal first drives. I've not looked into insurance yet on either (shudders at the thought) but just wondered how others had approached this.
I'm not overly keen to change either car, but could swap in the beetle for something more suitable if costs are prohibitive. Suggestions on cheapest insurance route for kids appreciated.
Driving lessons?
not your car, proper instructor (no slight on your driving), dual controls.
I wouldn't have though the insurance on either of your cars will be cheap, just imagine she pranged one of 'em too
Have a look at Marmalade - it seems a sensible way to do it & protects your own insurance.
Once she's passed her test, LV were by far the cheapest for me when I had a look, £1800 for a 1.9TDi Golf (which I was pretty shocked at), although we live in a fairly rural area which I'm sure has an impact on prices, as none of my mates could get anywhere near that. That was with my mum and dad as named drivers, but me as the main driver.
tbh She's better off just taking lessons, and once passed look at getting her onto one of the cars (or her own which might work out cheaper overall).
For my eldest they wanted over £2k..., just as a named driver (or a car he'd only get to drive occasionally as well).
Its normally cheaper to insure them on a provisional than once they've passed the test and can drive on their own.
We have just done it with Katie on a 1.4 Fiat 500. Tesco were by far the cheapest after putting our clubcard number into the quote and adding Kevin as a named driver. Started with no no claims discount.
Just worth noting that insurance for women will be being brought in to line with mens insurance premiums over the next couple of months (Dec I think) which is likely to mean a big increase, I have seen figures of 14-25% quoted.
In the long run it will probably be cheaper to insure her on a small very very low BHP undesirable car in her own name to start building no claims discount as soon as possible.

This ^^^ unless your loaded and don't mind teenage strops when you won't hand over your car keys on demand...
An old 1L panda plus insurance will be probably be cheaper than putting her on yours, and all the new driver clutch slipping, gearbox crunching, bumps and scrapes won't matter...
We put our 19 yr old on the wife's car
Insurethebox were around £600 but there are limitations on what it can be used for
