Hello strangers. Due to a fairly tough few years (during which I sold all my bikes) I have fallen out of touch with bikes. Would love to get back into it eventually. Considering a sensible priced all mountain type machine what is good at the minute?

One of my fave bikes was a 2005 Spesh Enduro

Thanks

Check the classifieds here and on pinkbike.
There's loads to choose from but if buying blind (without demoing) perhaps a more modern enduro would be a good choice.

Keep trying to get started again myself in pretty similar circumstances (except I still have a Marin Rocky Ridge kicking about that should be just about salvageable for getting back into things).

From my perusal of mountain bike dealerships that sporadically happen though I am liking the look of the Lapierres amongst many, many others!

Funding crisis may scupper any flash new bike ideas for a few years yet though in my case 🙁

Go to a shop, have a chat, try a few out to see what style of riding suits... Then ask this lot to argue about it for you 😀

A 2005 Enduro is still a bloody good bike now. Shame you sold it, if a minter were offered to me at the right price I'd take it.

It all depends on your budget. If you're looking for bargains, they are to be had but your money doesn't buy the same level as kit today as it did in 2005.

The trend for 30lb+ 150/160mm bikes has changed somewhat, more and more seem to be switching to lighter bikes of 120-150mm travel. A Stumpjumper Evo is probably close to your old Enduro in terms of capability but will be a fair chunk lighter. There's also bikes like the Lapierre Zesty to consider too. If budget for a new bike is tightish then try YT Industries or Canyon for a bona fide bargain.

Thanks for your help.

My budget is zero but I hope to change that fairly soon, I worked in construction and pretty much lost everything apart from my clothes. Thanks to the banking crisis.

MAybe we could help you out Joe by sending bits like pedals and things ? I've got some pedals, handle bars and a seat you could have FoC.

That is very kind. I still have all my clothes, camelbak's and a few bike bits. Want to get my hands on a wee full susser later in the year.

The decathlon full sus at £350 is a lot of bike for little money.

I read a couple of reviews of the 6.3 the other day (and took one for a spin round the gnarly excesses of Decathlon's sunglasses aisle).

Dated 2007 and 2011 respectively. Seems the newer bike gets a considerably lower 'score' but I don't immediately see why it got such a big markdown. Crap tyres, big whoop. Less than stellar fork, sure, but it's a £350 full suss, what were they realistically expecting?

Personally at that price point I would be looking at a hardtail. If you really want a sub-£400 bouncybike though, I think you'd be hard pressed to beat it.

I'd go secondhand off the classifieds here for a bike on a budget, just buy off a regular poster and check their profile to see if they are a closet trader
