We're thinking about getting a second dog. We have a 2.5 year old springer who is lovely (apart from smelling of fox poo sometimes) but we're now thinking of getting another dog so that she'd have another dog to socialise with (she sometimes seems a bit anxious and desperate for human company). Plus dogs are cool.

Is this a good idea, or are we totally to regret it terribly in six months time?

Do it, you won't regret it. I have 2 cockers, one is 11 and the other is 2. Getting a second dog was a big decision but it has proven to be a good one. The old dog now thinks she is a pup and the 2 dogs have become best friends. It does increase the work, the food bills and the vet bills though.

Two dogs is twice as good as one. Twice as bad too.

GF of the time decided she was going to get a patterdale in addition to the existing spaniel. they egged each other on. the spaniel had never had any inclination to chase deer or anything, but the terrier thought it would be rather fun, so the spaniel joined in. she came back first though. 🙂
i'll probably get another when mine gets on a bit ( she's nearly 8 now ).

Yea, but we are at tricky stage where older dog can only do short walks now whereas younger one needs an hour and a half. Bit tricky. But worth it.

My wife won't let me have another. Our springer although rarely is left alone goes mental when we do and I'd really like some company for her. I'm tempted to just rock up with one. Not sure how well that would go down!

do it.

(Currently trying to persuade the rest of the family that a whippet would be a good idea to keep Stan, our Bedlington, company...)

Our dog was similar age when we got a puppy. Best decision we ever made.

Do it. I find two easier than 1. You are already in he routine, as a generalisation dogs are pack animals and like being around more dogs, and there is less worry about leaving them alone for a few hours as they have 'company'. We briefly had 3 and found that significantly harder on walks, picking up shit just generally. So im convinced that 2 is the magic number here.

OK, I've done it. He's a Springer/Labrador cross, 8 weeks old.

I tried getting a cute picture of both of them together, but he doesn't stay still long enough for that 🙂

You can have mine!

But seriously, we've been tempted since whippets are apparently especially pack-orientated. But ours has an ongoing medical condition which may mean a shorter life than expected - and we wouldn't want to have one left over.

Sounds cold put like that, but I think these decisions are best made cold.

I had only one dog till 18 months back, he's a collie cross who is now about 14 I've now got two labs as well.

The older collie cross has really come to life having the labs around and is more lively now than he's been for a long time.

I think dogs are better with another as they are pack animals.
