You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
I am sorting out my Aunt's estate following probate.
She had a car parked in a garage. This is now registered in my name and insured in my name. On Monday, assuming it started, I'll drive it to an MOT centre near where she lived.
That's all fine and easy
Ideally I'd then drive it back the 100 miles to my house. But it looks like I can't tax it for a couple of days while the electronic MOT goes through. The Journey will be through London or M25. I want to keep it legal but also it will be driven past loads of cameras etc.
So do I stick in back in her garage and go back later in the week? Or is there something, legal. that I'm missing.
Cheers John
It can be driven legally without VED?
You should be able to tax it immediately after the MOT is complete. Via the DVLA or Post office.

The joy of the electronic system is you can do it immediately.
Book it in for the MOT at some place near where you live? It's legal to drive a car to a pre-booked MOT as far as I know. 100 miles might be taking the piss a little bit, but it seems an honest reason compared to some of the shysters who use the rule to buy a car in Plymouth and drive it back to Inverness.
Also, the impression I'm getting from various MPs and SPADS over the last few months is that you can do whatever you like with no concern for the consequences, so just crack on.
Cheers. We'll take all the documents and try and tax it on the day
For tax, use the V5. There's a green section for the new keeper to complete. IIRC, you use the 11 digit code on that.
Just remember you won't be able to tax it on a weekend or outside of office hours. Unless it's at a post office. If they still do it?

Whys that then ? I've taxed cars I've bought out side office hours prior to bringing them home.
All online.
You get a text saying the cars been taxed
Online tax wasn’t working last week. Assuming it you can do it anytime.
Not sure of the legality of it, but you can now only claim tax back for whole months. SORN a car on the 1st of a month and you have paid for the whole of the following month regardless. Likewise if you tax a car on the 31st of a month, you have to pay for the whole of the proceeding month despite the fact you did not even have the car then! So if you drove the car on the 15th of July but didn't manage to buy the tax until the 20th, you will have paid for the whole of July so all is good. This may only work in my world of common sense and, in fact, may not be much help when the ANPR picks you up and sends the fine I know! But that would be my argument if stopped anyway!

It used to be that you could only register the car in your name online during office hours. As I said, I'm not sure if it's changed or not but just a warning to check or OP could get caught out.
I taxed my new to me car on Saturday with the number on the green part of the V5. All on line and dead easy to do.
We taxed it on the phone really easily. Yes we payed for all of July but it's only £30 a year.
The battery was dead as a dodo. Ended up getting it recovered as I kept stalling and every stall was another jump. Test centre sorted battery but it's ££££ as the car does that cutout at stops thing
You can turn off the auto stop/start function to give your battery a chance to recharge after a jump start or just because the feature annoys you. Useful to know for the many cars that have sat around for the last few months.

The stop/start should be disabled automatically if the battery state is poor, at least it is on some cars. I had thought they all did that but given ampthill's issues maybe not. Seems a daft oversight if so.
