idave - it's our PR agency actually. In fact I do the majority of the work and ran it solely for 6 months while she was on maternity leave. Profits stayed level that year. But we work as a unit - whether she set it up (actually we both set up in it's current form) or not, it was from nothing. The fact it has worked out simply means it's a target for the have-nots. If it hadn't, it wouldn't matter one jot to anyone here.

Don - oh no they won't. We are government proofed. Please tell me how they will sh1t from a big height? They can't. No debts, no mortgage. The government can't really touch us.

"It was a dump when coal was being mined - it is a dump now."

Now imagine it with mass unemployment, a big heroin problem and a school that recently closed down.

There is a Job Centre there though, for people to get really, really good employment. Probably in PR agencies.

Easy there.

I'd offer everyone a beer, but I've only got champagne(*) at home.

(*)Home made, from grapes in the garden, probably pretty rough but it gets you drunk quick.

Well if you're asking, then I'm dancing. Cant wait, and yes, I know she's a dementing old woman, but I cant forget what she did to MY community, and I'll never forgive. **** her. As I mentioned on here a while back, I have an unfortunate sense of having been here before. After the 84 strike, I lost my job as a miner, but trained as a nurse, and have been more or less happy since. However, now we've got another Tory government in power, guess what? Yes, redundancy again. Dont believe the lie that there will be no cuts in the NHS.

Well if you're asking, then I'm dancing.

Matt, apologies if I got it wrong, but I'm sure you suggested that it was her agency to start with?

And I'm not coming at this from a 'have-not' point of view - quite the contrary. I've just lived enough to know that things are never as simple as any particular political view would want it to be.

In PR you must know about 'managing perceptions'??

Easington shows the same issues I saw when fishing dies in North Shields and shipbuilding died on the Tyne. Once the men realise that anything other than coal mining isn't women's work, they might get their heads around doing something other than mourning the death of the Big E and move on. I'd bomb it, but other communities like Consett (not lovely, but better than it was) moved on when their big employers closed.

Perfect, you don't pay tax and you don't have a pension. Absolutely govt proof? You've already helped them by [s]being suckered into[/s] buying a house and paying interest and charges in the belief that that is one of the most important objectives in life. You appear to be measuring success in fiscal terms, interesting.

Isn't that the whole Thatcher thing though? Money is the thing, and fek everything else. Then them that has it can call themselves better than anyone else, whether they worked for it, were born into it it, stole it or just had a wife who was more successful than they were doesn't matter, they are a SUCCESS according to the one measure they are capable of using.

Don - while I would love to bow down to your sense of moral correctness, we don't own a house. We literally have no debts as a mortgage IS a debt.

We plan to buy one soon outright therefore avoiding any interest payments.

But of course, we pay a fair bit of tax - both personal and corporation. No issues with that.

Yes yes TJ and Cameron WON the election didn't he? Hey it earns us a decent living and it benefits our clients hugely. So they hang onto us for years and years.

Well they might not in terms of your house and debts but rising unemployment in your area or strikes on public services will affect you as will you not bagging those big contracts when companies scale back during a down turn.. 🙄

You pay rent, no? That means you have an on-going monthly accumulating debt. If you don't pay it, you're out of a home. Unless you're such a huge success you still stay with your mum and dad. Which would explain a lot.

As an aside... I assume then that you rent, and that this is costing you money. This is money that is not paying off the capital on a property that you will one day own. This means that you're payments are potentially making worse financial sense than just paying an interest only mortgage.

Thatcher:

there is no such thing as society. There are individual men and women, and there are families. And no government can do anything except through people, and people must look to themselves first. It's our duty to look after ourselves and then, also to look after our neighbour. People have got the entitlements too much in mind, without the obligations.

everyone pays for poverty, even the smug rich like some people here. everyone has to suffer the crime that comes from poverty etc etc.

The fact it has worked out simply means it's a target for the have-nots.

Perhaps we target you for what you say rather than what you earn? Perhaps we just have a greater sense of fairness than you and think that wealth and opportunity should be spread out a little more fairly. Perhaps we think personal wealth is not the route to happiness and dont need to prove our worth to others by pumping iron and kicking @ss. Perhaps we are just trying to develop your social awareness whilst you focus , so succesfully, on your ego and body.

Funnily enough, we've thought of that. We pay a very small amount for the place we have, and we claim a chunk of it back as office rent.

There is no way we'd even get an interest only mortgage that would get anywhere near what we currently pay in rent both personally and through the business. It's a no brainer.

Meanwhile we save and save and will eventually buy outright. Yes we'll have paid a lot of rent overall in the end but it's meant living in nice places ideal for us and the little one while our business gets a cracking location for an office. And we'd rather pay rent to a landlord we know and get on very well with than to some tw4ts in a bank/mortgage company.

I've read through most of this, ....though I never bother to read Surf-mat's posts anyway, as they are consistently ill informed, poorly thought out and reactionary guff or simply cut and pasted responses from somewhere else. Getting into an argument with him is about as intellectually challenging as farting and really not worth the effort.

That being said, the rest of it's quite funny.:)

She put you in those positions when you started to work for her business? She did have the business up and running before you got involved didn't she? I have no sense of envy whatsoever, I'm pointing out that success is often a result of connections/privilege and not always down to graft etc. Likewise, lack of success/wealth is not always due to laziness or lack of ability. We don't live in a meritocracy. But you seem oblivious to this...

Ten fing pages, and all because the soppy tart has a heavy cold.

It really is going to be fing hell the day she eventually pops her clogs.

What with all the perpetual multi-page threads on here, the Tory press endlessly churning out their well-rehearsed myths about her, the televised state funeral, the constant TV programmes, the New Labour sycophants queueing up to heap praise on her, it really is going to be utterly utterly unbearable.

Some of yous might think you'll be partying and having a great time, I think I'll be getting the f*** out of Britain......first plane/train.

So how come I'm the Chairman and Director then?

I like to think of myself as the Oberfürher of my operation. Others call me different things though.

I almost feel sorry for Surf-Mat, he's taken such a pounding today.

Couple of tips, sunshine (told you to come to me if you needed any tips, din't I?):

*When faced with an overwhelming amount of forum opinion against you, you must ensure that your every statement can be backed up by fact, or prove the claims of others as wrong.

*When every avenue of argument has been exhausted, and you're not getting anywhere, then it's time to break out the pic posting. Random, completely unrelated images are good, as your opponents become confused and unclear as to how best respond or continue. This tactic has served me well on man occasions.

* Ensure that you truly, believe in everything you say. No point in coming out with stuff you don't really believe, as people will be able to pick your statements apart. If you're trily confident in your own views, you won't need to defend them to such a degree.

However, having never been in this position you're currently in, IE exposed as fundamentally clueless and full of nowt but narrow-minded individualistic rhetoric that none of us really beleive you mean, I'm afraid I can't really offer the advice you seem so desperately to need. Sorry. 🙁

Praps there's more valour in admitting defeat. Continuing this painful display will not serve you well, and leave your forum reputation in tatters, if indeed it's not already.

I'm afraid your AWESOMEness has been smashed, like so many pub glasses...

Poor Surf-Mat. 🙁 Notice how none of your fellow Tory Boys are here to defend you? They don't dare, the poor dears. Plus, sticking up for one another is evil and Communist, isn't it? Looks like you've bin left to fend for yourself, in the true Tory way.

Ok, leave it, everyone. He's had enough, poor bloke. It's no longer kind or humane.

i walked in from work tonight, the news was on radio 2.
i asked the wife if mrs thatcher had died, she replied 'no, but we can only hope'.
i then asked her if i was a bad person for wishing her dead.
she thought about it for a few seconds and replied ' you are going soft in you old age'.

Surely by those rules, its time for a soon-to-be-privatised postman holding a baby otter?

Oh, and perhaps we should make the bare chested greco-roman grappling on the beach a special STW web feature to mark Mrs Thatcher's funeral.

Back on topic, did I eat too much cheese before bedtime and dream it, or are we (err, the UK) really really planning on spending public money on a state funeral for her? 😯

say what you like about the iron lady but she did great things for the financial industry with her "light touch" approach, wonderful things for 20 state controlled utilities such as BT, British Gas etc, brilliant things for council housing, inspirational things to community taxation, brought Britain back to the forefront of international manufacturing and showed us all that unemployment was just down to people being to lazy or too busy moaning to go out and get work...

...oh, hang on

Hmmm.

Back in the day of the nationalised industries, they basically didn't give a damn about those poor saps who were paying the bills.

After all, why should they? They had a monopoly - so you had to go to them, and if they screwed up even that, the taxpayer would bail them out.

So if you wanted a phone line, you had to wait weeks before they'd even talk to you. Things are much better now that BT - and their ilk - have been privatised and so have to actually care about customers.

no Riot is awesome, it brings out the most base human behaviour and mob rule. It doesn't matter how right or just the cause if a riot occurs you've lost all moral high ground and become the worst scum.

how does the destruction of public and private property, physical assaults on members of the emergency services gain anything?

if you loose your temper, you've lost the argument

I hate to disagree but I think riots ARE awesome... not perhaps awesome like surf-mat... or awesome doood.... but awe inspiring.. full of awe.. a sight to behold and take the breath away and instill awe and probably terror into the heart of the witness..

so yes.. a riot IS awesome.. in a similar (but obviously much smaller) way to an earthquake or a thunderstorm.. it's not very productive perhaps.. unless people are inspired into more actions rather than procrastinations by the awesome fury and terrifying chaos of the riot..
People may respond to a riot as a mighty power and a demonstration of mass mobilisation.. maybe some of the greatest acts of history have been inspired by the riot..

awesome.. definitely.. unpleasant and terrifying.. very much so..

not everyone's cup of tea.. without a doubt..
