Rotten news. One of my favourite actors of all time. Circumstances sound very tragic, but with police saying no foul play, I imagine it's been something like carbon monoxide poisoning 🙁

A great actor sounds a very sad departure.

He will always be Lex Luther to me but so many great films.

That's sad - some good anecdotes floating around, sounded like a genuine good guy. 🙁

Sorry to hear that, he did so many iconic roles it's hard to pick a favourite.

I think I read somewhere that Dustin Hoffman and Gene Hackman were roommates back when they were struggling young actors but they didn't appear in a movie together until Runaway Jury in 2003.

Husband, wife and dog all dead?

CO poisoning is one hell of a way to check out aged 95.

Ah, that's sad. He really was one of the greatest, I suppose what they'd call "character actors"... Can hear that voice in my head now, the way he rose it to a high pitched tone, went right through you. You knew he was ANGRY! Bonny & Clyde, French Connection, Unforgiven, The Conversation, Get Shorty... so many awesome films.

I enjoyed many of his films and will watch Mississippi Burning tonight. You can feel his rage rising in this clip

That was my first thought too. Very sad for both families, but in a way, for the best, as it doesn’t leave one partner grieving over the loss of the other, especially if poisoning was the cause.

And yes, he was a superb actor, he’ll be remembered for a great many outstanding rôles.

The circumstances around the three deaths is starting to sound a bit more weird and CO poisoning appears to be ruled out.

When I heard about this on the radio earlier I just assumed they’d decided to call it a day, which in your 90s would be a nice decision to be able to make

Maybe we should show them some respect and leave the investigation go the Police

Seems things are more complicated now.

But Gene could be a great comic actor, and I’d completely forgotten this little scene from one of my favourite movies:

The BBC's posted a "here's what we know so far" article.

The full article is here:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cqlyy1rld0ko

It's not comfortable reading.  TL;DR, they're not ruling out foul play but haven't found any real evidence so far.

TW:

Spoiler
"If I were a betting man at this point I'd guess that Gene died during a fall and his wife took an overdose out of grief.  Dunno how the dog fits in unless it starved to death, it was in a bathroom cupboard (WTF?) and their two other dogs survived."

No, they are testing the bodies for it. They had been down awhile going off the description so wouldn’t be obvious as it is when it’s very recent.

The causes of death have been released. Both died of natural causes but a week apart.

Very sad.

I got him confused with Karl Malden for some reason.  But yeah, too mane great film roles, many I have forgotten.  One I do remember is Popeye Doyle in The French Connection.  A bit ott perhaps, but in the context of the film it just worked.  Also loved the soundtrack.

My old man loved the French Connection films. Two of my favourite films are Heist and Runaway Jury a few of his last films made. Though I always remember him first from Bat21 with Danny Glover.

I find it odd that his children had not been in touch if it was days before their bodies were found.

I don't. I can go for weeks without speaking to my parents who are both living with other people. If they were on their own I would be in more regular contact, even then it certainly wouldn't be every day.

Indeed. Seems he had advanced dementia. Strange that with the resources he must have had that there were no carers helping his wife look after him. If only there had been someone else in the house.

Is your dad 95?

Most people don't go weeks without speaking to their elderly parents.

As it happens I swapped emails with my mother (late 80s living alone) only a couple of days ago but it had been more than a fortnight before then. I'm obviously a bad son but to be fair I did also visit at that earlier time too.

Seances aren't usually effective?

The BBC report there talks of "advanced" Alzheimer's.  I don't know of course, but they're saying that it's plausible that he didn't realise his wife had passed.  That being the case, it's not a great leap to consider that any offspring would be calling in occasionally rather than phoning on a daily basis.  Having recently lost my mother I can attest that it's not an easy situation.

I have no idea when his children last spoke to him, my comment was in response to the suggestion that it's fairly normal not to speak to your parents for weeks.

I agree with FB-ATB's comment :

I find it odd that his children had not been in touch if it was days before their bodies were found.

I know nothing about Gene Hackman's personal life but it does seem odd that he doesn't appear to have had a welfare check from family for several weeks, especially when you consider that he was 95 years old and suffering from advanced dementia.

And as suggested there was presumably the financial possibility for him to at least receive professional assistance. It all sounds very tragic, and avoidable.

Where are we getting  "weeks" from? At worst case it would be two weeks, which I'd argue is not unusual in families even with elderly relatives, especially with one only being mid 60s.

It’s not unusual for people to have little contact with relatives for a week or more, certainly that in my experience. Some had laid for days, weeks and even months then only discovered due to a random visit, reports of the sightings or because of an odour.

The thing is though, that he was living with his wife who was in her sixties and seemingly in good health, acting as his main carer. He must have seemed safe and well cared for.

Her unexpected and sudden death (I gather that the dog that was found dead had just been brought back from the vets & was still in its carrier) is what makes this such a tragedy.

It seems fairly unforeseeable.

Nasty way to go though, pretty much dying of dehydration.

Living in isolation contributed to their demise.

No one can know the exact circumstances but it appears that she became ill a few weeks before her body was found, it seems a little odd that Hackman's family weren't aware of that and not least because she was his main carer.

This case is both tragic and unfortunate. Unfortunate because under normal circumstances people don't lay dead for several weeks undiscovered, especially if they have family.

It doesn't seem to be a normal run-of-the-mill situation, which is all that a lot of people are suggesting.

No one can know the exact circumstances

The coroners have worked out petty much the exact circumstances, she caught and died from a hantavirus infection likely around the 11th Feb, and Hackman (who perhaps didn't even know she'd died, so far advanced was his illness) died about 8 days later (the last recording on his pacemaker was the 18th) of his heart disease. It turns out according to friends and family that she was his main carer and worked hard to keep him fit and healthy, once she died, it was only going to end one way unfortunately

I was referring to the circumstances surrounding of how her illness progressed and how aware Hackman's family were aware of her deteriorating health, you have to assume that they weren't. I have to confess not following this tragic story that closely - -does the coroner know the details before her death? I know that they have established when she was last seen and when she stopped sending emails

Probably worth reading a story Ernie then you’d have a better idea of what was going on.
