Mrs BH has just called to say she is 50 miles from home and can’t engage 3rd gear in her old school Defender, all others are OK.  Never had transmission issues with it before.  What is the collective view - drive carefully without 3rd or make use of our recovery cover before it explodes in a ball of flame?

Half of all Land Rovers ever built are still on the road, the other half got home 🙂

I'd go for carefully without using 3rd.  But IANAM.  I have had previous experience with waiting for recovery and it tends to be sloooooow.

IANAM

However I would drive it - its either something simple like a linkage or selector fork - in which case driving will do no harm or its something more serious that needs a gearbox replacement / repair in which case driving will not alter that.  Is it quiet ( for a landy) in the other gears?

I’m not with her but wasn’t mentioned.  Think we’ll go for the gentle drive approach and see how far she gets - the independent garages are between her and home if it gets a bit more serious

How old school? 4th should be direct drive on anything pre-puma/tdci.

Short of stripping it by the road or getting recovered,  I'd probably leave it in 4th. Pull away in 4 low, then shift to 4 high (rev matching required) to avoid any damage.

It’s a Puma - by old school, I meant something pre the current school run incarnation.  A bit of google and it looks as though there is some sort of bias screw which centres on 3rd, or it’s tj’s school of thought.  Fingers crossed
