At last we're standing up for ourselves and no longer held in sway by the ridiculous euro rules which we had absolutely no say in and had dictated to this great sovereign nation.
We have told those pesky ruling euros that we're no longer using GB on our vehicles and number plates. It's UK from now on.
A blow for common sense.
1/10
Is that the real reason there’s queues at the petrol stations.
Proud patriots who can’t wait to get their new sticker.
There was me worrying that brexit was going to be a total ****ing disaster.
So no longer great, and for how long united ?
Another step closer to?

Though I do agree that the UK competing as Team GB is a potential affront to some in Northern Ireland – discuss.
Do you mean the ones who consider themselves British? Why would they mind competing for or supporting a “British” team rather than a UK one? Or do you mean those who consider themselves Irish? Would they be happier with UK?
Who is British? Discuss… [ or perhaps don’t ]
Is GB news going to have to rebrand already?
Ironic.... Neither "Great" nor "United".
GB news going to have to rebrand already?
"Gone Bust?"
This is all a pathetic attempt to assert GB authority over Northern Ireland at a time when, to anyone sane, it is clear that they are administratively part of a unified island of Ireland now.
I though GB now stood for Got Brexit .
Notice how the unionists are (relatively) quiet about it too. That's because they're busy coining it as a result of effectively being in the SM.
Well, this one escaped me until reading it here. Off to France tomorrow. So, I guess a trip down to Halfords this morning to see if I can get one. What a ******* waste of time and typical of this scummy so-called government.
I first read about this the other day, the article I read was so heavily coated with faux patriotism and brexit bullshit, I could really work out what it really meant. Ae we supposed to replace any numbers plates with GB or EU on them, or just when we drive abroad?
I can't actually remember what my plates look like, but I fancy ordering us EU ones just to wind them up.
You need an oval UK sticker now, don’t worry about the number plate.
[ but as regards winding anyone up, a valid UK labelled number plate can only show the Union Flag, you can’t have anything else, so no Saltires, St George Cross or yellow stars ]
but to answer your question, a valid UK labelled number plate can only show the Union Flag, you can’t have anything else, so no Saltires, George Cross or yellow stars ]
My plates have an EU flag... which was valid at the time. Are they now illegal?
Not illegal, you just need to use an oval UK sticker when on the continent.
>> You need an oval UK sticker, don’t worry about the number plate.
This makes no sense as it's always been an international code. Hence Isle of Man gets GBM, Jersey GBJ and Guernsey GBG.
Just another pointless exercise that, in reality, solves nothing.
I'm going to replace the flag on mine with this

This seems like a decent summary.
https://www.carreg.co.uk/carreg-news/displaying-uk-number-plates-in-the-eu/
They changed the rules twice, pointlessly, essentially.
This makes no sense
U.K. govt making pointless bureaucratic change that makes life harder for people travelling to the continent? Who’d have thought it! Media using it for click bait “your number plates may be illegal” bullshit rather than “govt wastes thousands on change for no reason” who’d have thought it! Number plate and sticker manufacturers heavily advertising the new “U.K. oval you need” even though virtually nobody is travelling abroad - who’d have thought it.
Though I do agree that the UK competing as Team GB is a potential affront to some in Northern Ireland – discuss.
I asked a similar question on here years ago and the answer was, I think, technically, neither the titles UK or GB include Northern Ireland. I'm pretty sure it's
[The United Kingdom of Great Britain] and [Northern Ireland]
not
The United Kingdom of [Great Britain and Northern Ireland]
Happy to be proven wrong though.
Anyway, I still have Euro plates with the flag and everything. It's my, admittedly pathetic, little act of defiance.
Of course it makes no sense. But nor do GBJ & GBG. Admittedly, they make even less sense now, but the "UK" stopped including any concerns about the crown dependencies in its decision making in 2016.
On a side note, we reserved UK for ISO codes long ago... so don't be surprised if we drop GB for more things at some point... yes it would be a pain in the arse, but hey, politics is nonsense these days.

a valid UK labelled number plate can only show the Union Flag, you can’t have anything else, so no Saltires, St George Cross or yellow stars
Not quite true. You can have the national flag if you want, it doesn’t have to be the Union Jack - you just need a UK sticker too.
https://www.gov.uk/displaying-number-plates/flags-symbols-and-identifiers
It actually appears it’s GB that’s been banned not any of the national flags or even the EU stars.
If you want to argue about it why not visit www.singletrackworld.co.gb for a chat.
My brother in law took his car in to a main dealers for its MOT and service. They immediately pointed out it was an MOT fail because of GB on the number plates. " We'll have to replace the number plates for it to pass,£20 for the pair ". He paid it !
you just need a UK sticker too
If you have an oval UK sticker, it doesn't matter what is on your number plate. As I keep saying.
>> You need an oval UK sticker, don’t worry about the number plate.
The rule change is said to have been made to be “inclusive of Northern Ireland” in the wake of Brexit. Great Britain is made up of England, Scotland and Wales, whereas the UK is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
Thankfully both our cars sport plain Jane number plates with no affiliation to any nation displayed.
Edit: but damn, my bike rack sports national affiliation to Scotland and Yorkshire next to the plate. Inherited from the previous owner from this forum...
He paid it !
B stards!
do I need an oval UK sticker for my "new" non EU UK passport?
coded as GBR in line with a multitude of codings used internationally
Government in London fiddling while XXXX burns?
I asked a similar question on here years ago and the answer was, I think, technically, neither the titles UK or GB include Northern Ireland.
Before Acts of the Union 1800, the country was known as the Kingdom of Great Britain or generally, Great Britain, after it was known as the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, which then became the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland following Irish independence.
As far as I'm aware, it isn't a legal requirement to display anything except your national number plate in France, not sure about Germany or Benelux; the only country in western europe which actively requires a national identity sticker is Switzerland, unless there have been recent changes. So, crack on with whatever you've got, certainly the Gendarmerie don't give a damn anyway!
Don't matter anyway, it's not like anyone can get enough fuel to drive to Europe 😀
Just got back from Halfords with an oval sticker costing a ripoff price. The last and only one on the shelves.
On the way to Halfords there was a filling station who, presumably, have some fuel and the queue into it coming the opposite way stretched into the distance and the traffic badly disrupted. So when I returned from Halfords I made sure I went a different way to avoid it.
Isn't just great to be British (or UKish) in a country run by this scummy, incompetent so-called government....... NOT!
the only country in western europe which actively requires a national identity sticker is Switzerland
There are EU countries where you have to display an oval sticker by law no matter what is in on your numberplate (Spain comes to mind) and many more where you don't want to be arguing with an official about why you don't have to have one because your number plate is/isn't to the new and shifting standards.
unless there have been recent changes
B R E X I T !
We're not an EU country any more.

Boris Johnson Broke Britain.

It's a bit of a messy mix of geographical vs official names.
The British Isles are a group of islands off the northwestern coast of Europe. The largest of these islands are Britain and Ireland. (Smaller ones include the Isle of Wight.) In the Middle Ages, the name Britain was also applied to a small part of France now known as Brittany. As a result, Great Britain came into use to refer specifically to the island. However, that name had no official significance until 1707, when the island’s rival kingdoms of England and Scotland were united as the Kingdom of Great Britain.
https://www.britannica.com/story/whats-the-difference-between-great-britain-and-the-united-kingdom
The 1968 Viena convention says the country of origin of a car must be displayed in any other country. This can be integrated into the number plate or be a separate sticker. AFAIK the only European country that needed a sticker up till recently was Switzerland as their number plates don't have CH on, they just have a couple of flags to represent the country and region. Now that UK has replaced GB you need a sticker. All the European country laws are based on the Vienna convention so there is no difference between countries and you need to have UK on your car in France like any other country.
Can we stop calling it Brexit?
It’s been renamed to Ukexit.
It’s been renamed to Ukexit.
Nah, it's still called Brexit. Northern Ireland haven't really left. That's why this bit of pointless gesture politics is happening at all, apparently, to reassure someone (although I still can't really see who that would be, or how it would be effective).
Isn’t just great to be British (or UKish) in a country run by this scummy, incompetent so-called government……. NOT!
Have you got a blue passport though? And don't forget sovvirintey.
Northern Ireland haven’t really left.
😉

Also, javelin and shot put.
I’m pretty sure it’s

The United Kingdom of [Great Britain and Northern Ireland]
"United Kingdoms..." isn't it?
Also, javelin and shot put.
It hurts!!!
The British Isles are a group of islands off the northwestern coast of Europe.
The British Isles????
You mean "these isles", or maybe "Western European archipelago"
If I buy some GB stickers, there’s a good chance they will be worth a bit in a few years time?
So sounds like there wasn't any point in me keeping the oval GenesisBikes sticker that came free with my Croix de Fer then.
The timing and politics of this are fishy.... but as above Great Britain hasn't been a country since 1800. UK is correct.
Trying to workout what I find most distasteful to have to say I am a national of....
A country so up it's own arse it slaps a 'Great' in front of itself*.
A country so sad it makes a thing about it still having a head of state chosen by being born into the right family.
*Yes, the great is something to do with being the largest landmass in the British Isles but it still sounds bellebdery.

I think it was the Romans that coined it, not us, its how they distinguished us from the other, smaller part bit of what they considered Britain - Brittany in France
I believe that to be true - apart from the Romans, which might well be true.
The British were the Celtic tribes of Wales, Cornwall and Bretagne (and before the English arrived parts of what is now England). The Irish were a slightly different bunch, the Scots were actually Irish, most of Scotland was populated by a different bunch again, and the English were Germanic of some description. Then the Normans arrive, and from then on doors open, welcome in…
#MongrelNation (and better for it).
Looking forward to every currency system in the world having to adopt UKP instead of GBP in years to come. 🤦
