Random q #4744
I have a leak on A lift pump that bolts onto the side of the block of on old tractor. I've replaced the gasket (cleaning the faces on the block and pump), retapped (at little bigger) one of the mounting holes as it had been stripped and it nice and tight. Gasket is NOT cork. What's the mechanics opinion on gasket sealant? Reading about loctite 5980 it looks just the job. Opinions?

<not an actual mechanic> I reckon threebond 1215 could even seal up blutone's picolax-assaulted bumhole. But some jobs basically want the proper gasket.

That stuff sounds good. Will see if local motor factors have it. Thanks.

It's really just a better-than-most RTV tbh. There is frinstance as far as I can tell nothing else in teh world that can stop a suzuki sv650's clutch cover from leaking. 5980's good too but imo harder to apply well. Whether either's right for your job I don't know.

Pics? If its a thin flange it can cause the gasket to "walk"

Sometimes dry is best.....

Hylomar Blue is best for gasketed joints in most cases -  https://hylomar.com/en/universal-blue/

I've used RTV with no issues on driveshaft seal plates in the past, pretty sure I've used both the Loctite and some other stuff.

Thinking about it the Loctite may have been in a bathroom somewhere 🤨

sometimes it's the clutch cover/component that has a distorted face. Tape some fine Emery cloth to a piece of glass or a flattened welding bench and move the component in a figure of 8 to remove any high spots.

Use only a thin smear of RTV as any internally displaced sealant can end up in oil ways/oil pump screen.

Fiat group used Loctite 509 for some applications, so no problems with the principle, but NB it's a self-forming gasket replacement

Surely old tractor gasket = bit of cereal box?

Next you will be wanting to use torque wrench on it and not the impact gun. 😉

A tip I have seen before is when using rtv or similar is to not fully tighten the bolts at first, let the goo go off then fully tighten

I've always had better results with stuff like Wellseal than Hylomar TBH.

It's more down to the fit of the gasket and the mating surfaces being right than the sealant.

What's the tractor?

Second Blue Hylomar, even successfully used it to replace head gaskets in my nifty fifty two stroke days.
