Got my gas bill the other day and they have doubled my direct debit payment in recent months as they say I've been using too much gas.
I've done some checking and indeed my gas consumption in the past year - well the past 6 months - has gone up significantly - in fact since last week when the gas meter was read I have apparently used 125 units - equivalent to 3 months worth of gas and £80!!! Surely this can't be right??? I turned the boiler down recently and we've not really used the fire so I'd like to think this isn't right.
Could the boiler have lost some of its efficiency and its now sucking gas in bucket loads without using it properly? (Dare I say we've not had it serviced in 5 years)
You can buy leak detecting solution to brush over any joints, though I suspect if there was a leak inside you'd know about it!
Gas rate it.
If it's a u6 meter (clock dial) put heating on full tilt and time how long it takes to do one revolution, as acurate as you can
If it's g4/e6 metric jobby same as above, heating on full tilt. note last 3 digits, run for exactly 2 mins, and take last 3 digits.
Let me knowm the time / readings and what boiler you have.
Paul - will do - will have to be tomorrow as boiler in kids bedroom and they're asleep at the mo.
I do hope you have a carbon monoxide detector in their room.
..and a smoke alarm
You need to tell me how many seconds it takes to do one full rotation Oh, as it's a combi, Hot water running flat out. That uses the most gas.
ok
I wonder if it's been cold over the last 6 months?
29 seconds to do a full rotation with the bath running.
Drac - It has been cold but we've had the heating on only slightly more than usual but our consumption (not bills) has gone up from about 70units per month on average over 48 months to 170 units per month in the past 6 months - just seems a surprising amount for it to increase all of a sudden
34.09 kw net/37.84 kw gross input using an average calorific value of 1040 (you should be able to find your actual cv on your gas bill)
The net input of a Modena 102 is 33.1kw, so you're not far off taking into account the accuracy of the meter dial, method of timing it, and poss difference in CV.
You might need to buy yourself a jumper 🙂
OOoo so I've had my gas up too much rather than something going wrong with it...
CV is 39.2 on the bill
I know this sounds silly but they haven't billed you for a metric meter have they ?
Is that possible?
I wouldn't have thought so. layouts of the numbers are different
