My Valliant Combi boiler keeps switching on during the night, heating the whole house, appears to be due to the frost protection overide. The boiler is in an attached outbuilding so temp is dropping below the 4c setting (not adjustable). The house thermostat is overridden by this, so I have not control of the boiler.
Having checked there does not appear to be a Pipe Stat to sense the pipe temp which should switch off the boiler once the pipes are above 4c.The sensing seems to be all internal.
Would getting a pipe stat cure my problem and the the potential for big gas bills throughout the colder months?
Yes fitting a pipe stat would solve this ,how do you know it is the frost stat ? more often than not it is the warm stat (hot water pre heat)combined with a passing diverter valve ,to find out turn warm stat off, hope this helps .
Peasant - so I need to turn off the water pre-heat?
yes ,then if it rads stops heating you have eliminated that .
Another thought you could go into the diagnostics and ask the boiler how many times the frost stat has operated .
Thanks for the help👍 the ambient temperature has risen now so difficult to know what's what. Turned off the pre heat but now water isn't very warm.
Will try to find out how to get into the diagnostics.
Will book a British Gas Homecare visit and see what they come up with.

I was at a house with this exact problem recently - boiler and frost stat in detached garage, heating on way more than it should have been. The frost stat dial has somehow been put on wrong, so where it was indicating as set to 5°C it was actually kicking in at anything below about 15°C.
Try turning it up and down to see if the click happens at the current ambient temperature. If not, the dial should pull off the central spindle and you can push it back on with the indicator at the right temperature.
