Can anyone tell me how a Garmin FR645 watch counts calories?

I've got a Garmin Edge Explore which counts calories via distance traveled etc.. which is great when im on the road bike/gravel bike/hardtail but not much use when on the e-mtb as it cant factor in the assistance being given by the e-mtb

Does the FR645 watch count calories via your height/weight/age and heart rate? or does it also use distance traveled?

Doesn't need to Know the distance, it's just a calc using the other parameters you mention, mainly hr and weight I think, and time obv.

On my instinct you can see the caloriesuseage is substantially lower on my ebike than it is on the plebike.

My Garmin watch uses your physical details (age, sex and weight) plus heart rate to work out resting and active calorie usage.

I've got an edge explore but always hook it up to the watch HRM. If you want to accurately track calories on the eMTB then I'd recommend you record your heart rate.

I used to use Strava on my phone a few years back and that would alter calories based on the bike used (road or MTB) so expect it was guestimating based on bike weight as well.

If by accurate you mean having HR will make is a better guess than not having HR...

It's just a crude lookup from a population mean curve, so it won't be very accurate for any one individual. Similar to the 220-age max HR formula, which was just a mean fit to a very noisy set of data from lots of individuals, none of whose max HR was actually 220-age.

While I'd wholeheartedly agree it's not accurate, it's a good barometer of how you've worked across different rides.

As above - Garmin just using distance, gradient, speed, weight/age is usually about 30% higher calorie count than if you put the HR monitor on. 50km at 30+kph will be 2100calories for the former and about 1400-1500 for the latter depending on the wind.
