I have an eager chum sat here frothing at the mouth for some garmin action..

is the garmin forerunner 610 still top of the heap..?

Is there anything else he should be looking at with a £200 budget?

Garmins are great: I've got a Forerunner 210 and it has pretty much everything I need. Much less than the budget as well.

+1 for the Garmin, i've had a 210 for about six months, can't fault it.

Garmin 405 for me. Never had any problems, usually around 130-140 on amazon with HRM.

Been impressed with my 405cx, paid £128 from Amazon last April. Think the 410 has replaced it. £200 should get you something decent

I've got a 210, it's not bad but there are some things I miss which more expensive models have: pace alarms, the ability to define complex workouts online and upload them to the watch, wireless data transfer (stops you charging the battery too many times...), it's not properly waterproof... That said, it's perfect for logging runs, keeping an eye on your current pace etc.

I've got the 410, sure I got it for £125 off Amazon with the HRM. Really good piece of kit, worth every penny. I like how you can customise what displayed on the front screen. I use it on the bike too with it strapped round some pipe insulation on the bars.

I'm a Gramin man for both running and cycling. Due to a kne injury I have now 'retired' from the running. I have a 405 which has been awesome. Accurate and easy to use, only issue is in the rain which sometimes auto scrolls the pages (i think this must have something to do with the bezel getting wet as I never have this issue in the dry).
Oh and the fact that as now need specs I find it difficult o see the numbers on the screen - believe me they are not small just goes to show how much my eyesight has deteriorated in the past couple of years.
On the bike I use the 500 which is just perfect for my needs.
Anyway if you are looing for a Garmin 405 GPS make me a sensible offer and it can be yours. I am keeping the HRM which I use with m 500 so this is for the watch only. You can get a new Garmin HRM for £30+ (cheaper if you go the second hand route).
