How do I convert a .gpx file into one that can be used in the gps?
And how do I get the files into/out of the software or GPS? At the moment it seems to be a closed system, the gps talks with the software just foine but neither can interact with windows to use gpx files saved elswhere on the computer.

If it's like my forerunner, it doesn't do native .gpx.
http://bikeroutetoaster.com/ lets you upload a GPX and save out in other formats. Or if you've got the right plugins (it will prompt for them) it can write it straight to the device which is handy.
Or what I usually do is open it in GPS Utility ( http://www.gpsu.co.uk/ ) and save it out as a Garmin Course (crs) file which I can transfer with the software.
