On my Garmin, if I go to the elevation screen, it only shows me the elevation of what I've cycled already. Fair enough, it doesn't know where I'm going.
Seems it works well with a saved gpx file.
But if I ask it to navigate to the next town on the fly I still can't see future elevation.... Am I doing something wrong or is that just the way it works?
What maps are you using? Do the maps contain elevation data?

I don't think it computes 'on the fly' elevation data. Only when it has been imported as part of a course that you upload. I might be wrong, but I have never seen it.
Yep, you have to load a course or have pre ridden it.
That's a shame, would have been handy!
